I got tired of lugging chains and load binders in and out of the garage, finding a place to store them etc, so I built this tongue tool box. I got the idea from a friend, maybe you guys have seen something like this maybe not, just thought I'd post some pics of it.

Cut expanded metal to fit inside the C channel frame. Bent the back section up to the deck hieght so nothing slides out the back. Cut/welded a top from 1/4" checker plate, split it roughly half way and hinged it. Now I always have the chains, binders and straps with the trailer and they are locked in. The expanded metal is nice because it don't hold mud/water/snow and I can hose the chains down and all the mud/dirt etc falls out the bottom.

That's a good idea and you did a nice job. I think you're going to regret not making it weatherproof though. In the winter all your chains, binders and whatever else you have in there will be a soild frozen mass. Not to mention everything rusting in there from water.

sweet. i also like that it is not overly obvious as to what it is. most people would not think that cains, binders, etc. would be under there.

Very cool... I think I'll copy that idea for our gooseneck... it's got an expanded metal bottomed tray across the front of it... I just leave chain, booms, spare driveshafts and junk in it... always worry about someone stealing... lucky so far.

FYI... You can buy those metal hinges for just a couple of bucks at a steel yard that sells iron gate parts etc.

My additional bit of advicle... make sure you use expanded metal with a small enough opening to prevent any of the chain links from slipping through. I've got a couple of links of chain hanging down from mine right now that have somehow worked their way through... like a damn rubix cube puzzle trying to get those things back out sometimes.

Cool idea.
Did you do anything to protect the wiring? I would be concerned about having the chain hooks grabbing wires when I go to pull them out.

I bought the new (2003) so all the wirng is still original and still run through the factory conduit.
