You east coast guys need all the places to wheel you can, this is important:

Possible NJ OHV Park threatened.
We need LOTS of letters/emails/phone
calls
FAST
What has happened is that the old Jungle Habitat Safari Park land in
West
Milford, NJ was purchased by the state about 14 years ago and has sat
idle
since. A local firm, X-treme Habitat, has made several proposals to
lease the
area and turn it into an OHV park that would be open to pretty much
every
mechanized form of recreation. The state says that it fits into its
goal of
offering a multitude of recreational activities to its residents and
visitors.
Now step in the "our way or no way at all" groups. They like to call
themselves environmentalists but I can't remember the last time I heard
about
any of their members really doing anything meaningful for the
environment
except fund lawsuits. They staunchly oppose this park... of course, its
not
their way of enjoying the outdoors. "State parkland was bought for open
space, not for development," said Jeff Tittel, the executive director
of the
Sierra Club's state chapter, who helped guide the state's 1988 purchase
of
the property. "This is not a friendly use of the land. The whole
800-acre
tract gets carved up. It's going to turn the land into a giant piece
of
Swiss cheese," he said.
Interesting.. Private property that was once a large chunck of
development
can't be developed for outdoor recreation? The land already has a 3,000
car
parking lot and a four lane entry road... thats not developed already?
Why is
he calling this "dead" land parkland? Call it green spin... If you'd
like to
see what the opponents have to say go to:

So... what can we do? Right now we need everyone to call the
following
numbers or fax a note to the number below addressed to folks listed
here and
it will be copied and delivered to each of them.
Walter Porter phone # 973.881.4460
Sonia Rosado 973.881.4417
Georgia Scott 973.742.3746
Lois Cuccinello 973.225.5416
James Gallagher 973.225.5415
Michael Mecca 973.225.5414
Peter Eagler 973.881.7891
FAX letters to : 973.742.3746 for all of them....one letter,
secretary
will make copies for all.
If you are a NJ resident and even if you aren't contact the local
representatives by going to: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/
Here are some of the Assemblymen/Senators' emails.
Assemblyman Scott Garrett asmgarrett@njleg.org
Senator Gerald Cardinale sencardinale@njleg.org
Senator Torricelli http://torricelli.senate.gov/webform.html
Senator Corzine http://corzine.senate.gov/comment.html

All one needs to say is that you support the X-treme Habitat proposal
to
create an OHV park at the old Jungle Habitat Park and that you would
most
definately come from whatever state you live in and spend $$ in NJ as
you
visited the OHV park.
Thanx in advance for all your assistance.

What's the deal on this park. From what I've read it is only going to be for BMX, mtn bike, ATV and motorcross riders, I didn't see anything about 4WD trails like something you'd find at Paragon. Is this area going to be open to 4x4's like PAP in Hazelton, PA? If this is the case, I'd be more then happy to rally some support with some folks in PA. Our land's getting shut don, so we need somewhere to ride and considering the success of Paragon, we don't mind paying a couple buck for land use.

IMO, we need to support this, for a couple reasons...

Most of us do other forms of recreating (mountain biking, dirt bikes, etc) so this affectes us.

I'm pretty sure you have a close friend or two tha share the same intrests. So help them so they will help you.

This needs to be looked at on a larger scale. We are all part of hte Multiple Use community. We need to stick together. If we don't, and we start seperating our intrests, we're finished...

I hate cliche`s, but "If we scratch their backs, maybe they'll scratch ours" is a good way of looking at it.... It's an easy decision for me since I enjoy all types of recreation....

As of right now, it is only proposed for a bmx and moto-cross park. But we need to support all ohv communities:usa: . The green groups all group together so we need to also. Some of the funds that are coming from the state are also slated for 4x4 use.
