I hear people slamming 256's a lot.
To be honest, I don't have much knowledge about this particular engine, and I was wondering where somebody could point me to some information on the amount of liters it displaces, as well as the amount of horsepower and ft-lbs. of torque that it generates, and at what RPM's.
I would have gone to Jeeps Unlimited, but they're having some sort of funky tech problem and I can't register or post there.

And it's 258 you won't find anything looking for 256

Bah. Like I said, I don't know much about 'em. Thank you, however, from preventing more humiliating experiences in the future.
All I need is to find more about my lil' 258. The dispute I have is whether to rebuild it, or switch in another engine. I want to stick to AMC and jeep, and also get some sort of decent mpg as this doubles as a daily driver.

If you switch engines and want to stay jeep, go with a 4.0 EFI.

well.. if you want good gas mileage, buy a honda :flipoff2: Jeeps don't get "good" gas mileage... period.. as far as your motor.. Id keep it, slap mopar MPI on it, with a 4.0 head...
But thats just me.

there are 61.02 cubic inches in a liter. 258/61.02= 4.23 liters.
it's a good engine as far as durability and torque. enough power to get it on down the freeway and great for rock crawlin. worth it to rebuild. biggest downfall is the carburator VS fuel injection. i've got 145,000 on mine and it runs STRONG. i will probably rebuild when it dies if i keep it that long. looking at the rumored rubicon this summer :)

another way to calculate displacement:
1 cubic inch=16.387063 cubic centimeters (ack, the word makes my fingers feel dirty!)
AMC 258 is a good, tough engine. if you want to stick with AMC jeep but get more cubes, get a 360 v8. they are cheap and plentiful, and make mad torque. they are also a direct bolt in swap (with some minor alterations to the wiring harness and maybe to the fuel delivery system).
BTW, the 256 inline 6 is a chevy engine :flipoff2: :D

If you want to do it within the next 12 months, forget the MPI they are back ordered. Just go with a 4.0 from a newer Jeep. The 4.0 swap will also save you the head ache of trying to eliminate pinging associated with the MPI on a 4.2.:smokin:
