: VW 1.6L Turbo Diesiel?
GRABBER 02-01-2002, 01:09 AM I'm new to sami's, (toyota guy). I have heard a lot about the VW 1.6L Turbo Diesiel. How many guys here have tried this motor, and what tranny and t-case set-up would be best for this set-up to fit under a sami? I'm also wanting to get to around 200:1 crawl ratio, dont care much about road manners, will be trail only rig. And I'll also be running toy axles with 5:29's. Tried Search, but did'nt find anything. Thanks guys.:D
Rockrat 02-01-2002, 03:20 AM Well I hope this helps a little, has not been a whole lot of talk about the vw swap in awhile the big swap seems to be 1.3 to 1.6,1.3 to 22re and some guys are doing the v-6 thing My o2 is that a 1.6 would be the cheapest most ecinomical and least headache some would differ. As far as your gearing goes with straight sam stuff your looking at r/p gears 5.29 X trans1st3.652 x t-case 4.163 x Klune-v4.1=329.74 I think there is another way if you go with the sidekick trans and a toy t-case but i dont no all of those specifics I can tell you that more than I will reply to help you and you'll have all kinds of combos by the end of the day
Good Luck Rockrat :smokin:  :D I think RRO has the vw adapter kits
0ILBURNER 02-01-2002, 07:00 AM Petroworks is supposed to be working on a new VW diesel kit which uses the Sidekick transmission. This would be great to use the OTT "kicker", where you use the modified Sidekick t-case (for Hi-Lo range) and still use the Samurai transfer case w/ 4.16 gear kit. (You'll need to verify my numbers here)
That would get you : 3.652 x 2.2 x 4.16 x 5.29 = 177:1
Another new option is an adapeter which lets you literally use a Toyota transmission : 3.9 x 2.28 x 4.7 x 5.29 = 221:1
Both scenario's would require some pretty substantial fabrication work.
I have a 1.9L VW diesel w/ Samurai tranny+Klune+stock Sam t-case: 3.652 x 4 x 2.82 x 5.29 = 218:1 :grinpimp:

EMIEVEL 02-01-2002, 04:07 PM Mr. Oilburner,
Did you start off with the 1.6 TD? I just spent $1000 getting my turbo and pump rebuilt for my 1.6 TD, and I'm wondering if those parts will bolt on to the 1.9 TD. Do you know or will you point me in the right direction to find out?
Thanks!
GRABBER 02-01-2002, 04:35 PM Thanks for the info. guys:D . Oilburner, your setup sounds like a good one, but an expensive one (i.e. KLUNE!):D . Do you figure your front and year driveshafts will be close to the same length? What is your wheel base going to be? Also, how strong do you think the Kick tranny, and Sammi t-case are? In relation to the added torque of the VW 1.6L TD.:) Also whats the wieght relation of the VW 1.6L TD, to the 1.3L Sammi, then to say a 2.4L Toy? I was staying away from the 2.4L Toy for weight reason, and figured the VW would be quite a bit lighter. I liked the Idea of using the VW TD, with a toy tranny and dual toy t-cases with the 4.7:1 kit. But didnt know if it was possible to mate the toy tranny to the VW motor, or if there would be enough room.:D
Rocky Road 02-01-2002, 05:11 PM You can find out more basic information on what's involved with the TD swap at http://www.rocky-road.com/diesel.html
EMIEVEL, email me direct and I can put you in touch with folks that know all there is to know in interchangeability with VW parts.

Yeah, thats a good write up on the VW TD, thats where I first got to thinking about it.:D Whats the ideal set-up for rockcrawling you guys over there at Rocky Road think is best with the VW TD? (Tranny - T-case).:)
GRABBER 02-01-2002, 11:39 PM What about the VW motor, to an SM420 tranny, to a toy t-case with 4.7:1 kit. Also with 5:29 diffs. What would the overall crawl ratio be, I dont know what the SM420 is, but I know it has a real low 1st gear.
Just a thought.

I found out the SM420 is 7.05-1, 1st gear. So the overall crawl ratio would be like 175:1, with this set-up. That would be nice. But would be costly with the two adapters, and the 4.7:1 kit, (if someone even makes one to mate the VW to the SM420). Would be a nice set-up though, nice and short, what I would be looking for. :D

No I bought a new 1.9L from the get-go. I worked with Doug Kelsay to troubleshoot the 1.9L swap in my rig. The 1.6L turbo stuff will NOT bolt onto the 1.9L - it perhaps could be modified, but you have to have 1.9L TD manifold, ETC. to bolt on. (both intake and exhaust ports are different than 1.6L)

Oilburner, your setup sounds like a good one, but an expensive one (i.e. KLUNE!):D .
A. Do you figure your front and year driveshafts will be close to the same length?
B. What is your wheel base going to be?
C. Also, how strong do you think the Kick tranny, and Sammi t-case are? In relation to the added torque of the VW 1.6L TD.:)
D. Also whats the wieght relation of the VW 1.6L TD, to the 1.3L Sammi, then to say a 2.4L Toy? I was staying away from the 2.4L Toy for weight reason, and figured the VW would be quite a bit lighter. I liked the Idea of using the VW TD, with a toy tranny and dual toy t-cases with the 4.7:1 kit. But
E.didnt know if it was possible to mate the toy tranny to the VW motor, or if there would be enough room.:D
A. I run a Toyota rear driveshaft, so my front & rear won't swap - never actually measured length, tho (good idea) Think my rear is ~31"?
B. My wheelbase is around 96"
C. I believe the Sidekick transmission is capable of handling the 1.6LTD without a problem. I haven't seen a Samurai t-case fail because of power, but I will have a spare with me just the same.
D. The VW motor has aluminum head, but it's noticeable heavier than a SIdekick 1.6L. (although I wouldn't think anywhere near as heavy as the Toy engine)
E. I think it "MAY" be possible in the near future to easily mate a VW TD to a Toyota transmission. IF the new diesel kit utilizes the Sidekick transmission pattern, hypothetically you could use Kerry's adapter which goes from Sidekick bellhousing to Toy. tranny. Then you could stack to your heart's content :D
Sure would be good to hear an update on the latest VW swap...
Slowzuki 02-04-2002, 11:20 AM I'm watching the VW scene too. I'm looking into using a Volvo (VW) diesel bell housing to mate to the VW engine then go to toyota or sidekick t-case + tranny.
A popular swap in Volvo diesels is to dump the diesel and 5spd when it's old and pop in a 350 or 302 with auto tranny so there are a few bell housings sitting around.
Ken
GRABBER 02-04-2002, 11:18 PM Thanks for the added info. Anybody have any pics of their VW TD, in the Sammi?:)
EMIEVEL 02-07-2002, 12:29 AM Grabber,
I think I'm going to sell my Zuk with the VW 1.6TD in it. I'm going to get the SOS kit and use my 1.6 Tracker motor instead. That will make my project much easier to finish for me.
The Zuk is complete and the engine just got $1200 worth of turbo, pump, and injector work done to it. I had all that work done and haven't driven the thing more than two miles. The engine works great. The body on the Zuk is a hard top that has seen better days. It was not abused, it just was not lifted, so the body damage was greater than normal. It has the KELTEC kit in it and it looks like it came from Suzuki with that motor. The Zuk also has onboard air via Zuk a/c compressor, with a tank, guage, switch, all the right stuff. The chassis is in great shape, all the hard work of installing the VW is done! I was going to swap bodies, put on some desireable suspension, and run it! Anyway, I want $3000 for the whole thing. That's pretty reasonable considering the costs of:
engine
Keltec adapter
misc. parts to complete swap
labor in doing such a thing
complete driveable Zuk with title
I need the money to pay for the Toyota parts and SOS kit, plus some new shoes for the Toy axles! I will separate the Zuk to get it in your price range if necessary. Let me know.
GRABBER 02-07-2002, 12:35 AM Cool, I'll let you know. $3000 is a decent price for everthing. May be awile before I can do anything. If you still at least have the motor when I'm ready, I'll check it out. Thanks,
Eric
EMIEVEL 02-07-2002, 12:41 AM Eric,
Do you know Steve Lamson? He's from your town. I used to race with him at the Natioinals and Supercrosses til I got hurt real bad. He just broke his leg again last week!
GRABBER 02-07-2002, 12:57 AM :D Yeah, I know Steve, he lives right next door to my parents. I saw that he had a busted leg, last time I was over there, havent talked to him much lately, he did that down in San Diego, right. He's a cool guy.:D
EMIEVEL 02-07-2002, 01:03 AM Eric,
Please tell him you've been talking to Chris Ridgway. I haven't seen him for a while. Also, tell him I broke both of my legs again but I'll be racing by June, that's why I haven't been around. Tell his wife (Cami) she's SUPER HOT while you're at it! She is too!
Later
GRABBER 02-07-2002, 01:09 AM Yeah, shes hot all right!:D I'll let him know.:D Good luck with the recovery.:)
