: CJ5'ers, driveshaft Q's
IndyCJ 02-01-2002, 09:27 AM Hey Syko, 66CJDean, Wheelinpiazza, anyone else?
76 Cj5, doing the springover thing, and I have a 304/T176/D300/D44's combo.
Now, starting to think about a rear driveshaft. When I pulled apart that 75 Cherokee that I got, the front driveshaft was a CV. Can I use that shaft, and have it shortened to the length required?
Any ideas? Suggestions?
What kind of shaft lengths are you guys running?
TIA
Out.
Oh, and syko? :flipoff2:
You too Scott, if you're lurking. :D
:flipoff2: Back at ya
I was running a 17 3/4" rear driveshaft 304/t-18/dana 20
I was SOA for a while and the rear worked fine at that length. (note: I did have to modify the yokes a little with the grinder:D)
On the CV: If it will bolt up and the person you have cut it down will ballance it. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
What springs are you using that would make you need a CV rear shaft?

Use the drive shafts that I have in the 5 now. They will never break.:D:flipoff2: Love those beefy axles don't ya
IndyCJ 02-01-2002, 12:05 PM I don't know if I would need a CV or not, that was kind of the question.
It would seem (from my Wrongler days) that if I'm doing SOA, I would need a CV shaft.
I've got JC Whitney Wagoneer (HD) front springs for the rear, and HD CJ7 springs for the front. :)
Anyway, I just look at it (I don't have the tranny and t-case in yet) and it would just seem DAMN short, and that I would need a CV.
I dunno.
Nice Jeep Syko. Looks kinda familiar.
Old Syko 02-01-2002, 12:39 PM Seen syko crawl all day with a 2 inch offset in his front shaft. Yet he wants to make sure you get yours ballanced.

I would say no, but what the hell do I know. :D I really didn't drive mine on the road to much when I was SOA. When I did you couldn't tell if the shaft was vibrating or the tires:D When I flexed it everything cleared. (as far as the shafts went) The front tires on the other hand were in the firewall.
What are you plans to prevent axle rap?
Nice Jeep Syko. Looks kinda familiar.
It had to die to build the Scrambler:D
The 5 will be back to life very soon.. 2 words bender, 60's:evil:

I'm getting a traction bar kind of like Sam's, I think. One of the guys on here is starting a little 4x4 biz, and he's gonna use my Jeep as a guinea pig. :D

Hook me up:D I'll try most anything once....maybe twice if I like it.:D
66CJdean 02-01-2002, 01:59 PM To me I say ditch the CV on the front. You might need it for the rear though.
WheelingPiazza 02-01-2002, 02:17 PM I know with my CJ-5 with waggy 44 rear scout 44 front I wont need a cv in the front , but I will in the rear..
Of course I am running a 420/300 combo too..
I know mike is not runnign a CV on his and hes 231/420/18
emsoffroad 02-01-2002, 04:09 PM I used to have the small tubed CV in the back of my 65 cj5. After braking two of them(hole shots lifting the front tires off the ground.) I switched to the larger tubed CV found on Broncos. I don't need the CV, it was the only shafts I had laying around, and running a C4/D18 makes for a short shaft(12"). Then again I'm running an 18 so my angles are great.
CJ-Jeeper 02-01-2002, 06:29 PM You should probably use the CV in the rear if the tube is beefy enough. You will ned a yoke for it.

I guess I wasn't clear. The CV Shaft is the front driveshaft off of a cherokee, to use for the Rear of the CJ.
Sorry for the confusion.
I just grabbed the driveshaft because it was CV, thinking that I might need to / be able to use it in the rear of the CJ.
66CJdean 02-01-2002, 08:00 PM I see.
I snag them too even though I don't run a CV at all they are nice to have to cut down to make spare drivelines out of. The Cherokee ones are sort of thin though for a rear.
Ghetto Fab. 02-01-2002, 08:54 PM I've got the 258/T18/D20 combo and my rear shaft is a whopping 14" long. It has a four link rear now so the cv works out great. Of course the cv angle limits the amount of total droop I have, but not articulation. Funny thing though, I used a cherokee front shaft and cut it down. Well that little 2" dia tube turned out to be like 2" 0.120 wall tubing. If you can I would suggest pushing the axle back as far as possible. Once I get rid of the gas tank in the rear I will move my whole setup back a foot.

I should be able to do that!! Give us a little bit to get up and running, and then we'll have to talk.
By the way, where in the hell is Palmyra??????:flipoff2:

If I remember correctly, isn't it in the Corydon/Madison area? Other side of the state dude
Meyer 02-02-2002, 06:58 PM Hey, :flipoff2: to you too,
My solution: I take the 36's off your hands, give you my 33's, and we sawzall mine even more.
CJ5-Man 02-03-2002, 11:10 PM on my 76 CJ 5 thats sprung over w/ 44 rear and stock HD cj7 springs my driveshaft is 21" long, thats with the stock 3 speed and dana 20. I decided to use a CV joint a long time ago when the stocker dropped off the jeep on the tollway.
