Does anyone here know anything about JEEPS? I dont know the difference between a TJ, YJ, BJ or PB+J :flipoff2: I have a bunch of newbie questions. Looking to PM someone with knowledge or point me to the IH8MUD of gay JEEPS.

TJ has a coil suspension, fuel injection, and all around more creature comforts out of the box. YJ's have a SUA leaf sprung suspension, some are carbureted some EFI and they were the first tubs to be galvanized from the factory. Stay away from the Peugeot trannies in the YJ's and D35 rears in either model (obviously). 5 speeds came with numerically higher gears, autos were 3 speeds until last year I believe. The NP231 tcase will need a tail shaft replacement for anything over 3" of lift or so.

I have found that more corners are cut when I work on my TJ than when I do on my 40. I really dont like how the TJ's and YJ's use the tranny skid as the crossmember for the frame. That was a nice surprise when I went to do some work for the first time. Im constantly unimpressed when I crawl under my TJ and wonder what the hell DC pays their engineers to do.

Parts are a hell of a lot cheaper than those comparable to a Cruiser, and normally easy to get at the local larger parts stores.

As far as boards to go to that deal with Jeeps, there is the one obvious one that will tell you on a daily basis what colors look good with what tires and all of the remedial crap you'd ever want to know :shaking: , you can check out our local board here in MA NEOW.ORG (http://forum.neow.net) , lots of Jeep guys among other types of rigs and a great knowledge base. I use IH8MUD and here for Cruiser info, NEOW and POR for everything else.

got some jeeps finding their way into your shop huh? :D its bound to happen.

ideally we would just work on what we dig, but the fact of the matter is they out number us, their typically not as tight with their money, and when it all comes down to it,.... we all end up with chevy drivetrains eventually :grinpimp:

hell, Im doing a 4 link on a YJ next week :flipoff2:

That's some funny sh!t ! LOL

In my opinion the last one that were built half way decent were the CJ models but Jeep has never built anything that can be compared to the Land Cruiser.

I have a hard enough time working on cruisers to open the shop to JEEPs but... A good customer/friend has a boss who is a LTC. USA who is about to hit Iraq for a year. He has been home a wopping 3 months and now must go back! He asked me, as a favor, to do a few things to his JEEP. I just cant say no. He has ideas but I have no real idea what all is involved. I need to learn JEEP. I learned sign language once; this cant be much different :flipoff2:

Thanx for the help.

Why dont you ask this in the heep forum or take it to chit chat. To much BS on the TLC forum that has nothing to do with cruisers. :shaking:

Short story is that it is a '97 ?J with the crazy little axles! 100% stock as is. He wants new axles, Dana 44ish?, OX lock in back, lunchbox in front, 4" lift (coils I think, maybe)? rear disk, motor upgrades like some chip BS? some sort of slip yoke elimanator (good spelling) etc... He has 3.70s ish and wants 4.10s ish but will run 33-35" tires. Not ever to be a rock crawler but a good off road vehicle.

Since I would be open to flame others for this conversation lets hit PM.

I tell you why I asked this here. I am a member of this forum and like to think I contribute when I can. I had an issue and asked for help. I did not intend for it to become a detailed list of anything that is why I only asked a general question looking for ideas on a subject I know has little bearing on this forum. That is why I titled it as I did. Looking for help from friends that might have any answer. They did.

Short story is that it is a '97 ?J with the crazy little axles! 100% stock as is. He wants new axles, Dana 44ish?, OX lock in back, lunchbox in front,. #1 Don't put a lunch box locker in the front. They dont have hubs or an axle diconect. if he is not going to wheel it hard just put a good locker in the 30. ARB or ox, I would go ARB but thats me.
the only upgrade of a 44 front is the housing and the diff. The stock 30 front has 297/760 u-joints allready
4" lift (coils I think, maybe)? RE short arm super flex kit. rear disk, get a complete rear 44 from drivetrain direct or Superior with disc's best value imo. motor upgrades like some chip BS? some sort of slip yoke elimanator (good spelling) etc... JB conversion has a nice kit. He has 3.70s ish and wants 4.10s ish but will run 33-35" tires. Not ever to be a rock crawler but a good off road vehicle. with a 4.0 6cyl, 33" tires= 4.56 gears, 35" tires = 4.88 gears

Since I would be open to flame others for this conversation lets hit PM.
I will be riding Shotgun in a 98 TJ for the Shafers rock and road run, from Vegas to Reno in A couple weeks :flipoff2:

OffRoad.com Jeep Spec Guide (http://www.off-road.com/jeep/swb/articles/specgrid.htm)

The Slip-Yoke-Eliminator (SYE) changes the rear output shaft of the xfer case from s splined shaft that accepts female coupler to a fixed yoke that accepts a u-joint cross. Jeepers hate the slip yoke because if the rear driveshaft must be removed off road, the xfer fluid leaks out where the female coupler comes off. Dead city. SYEs also allow a longer rear DS which helps with harsher angles created by a lift.

Bear in mind that not all SYEs are created equal mainly because some have stronger shafts than others. Search the jeep section for the best or start a thread there. Here's one SYE Review (http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/JB_Wood_crosstrainer/index.asp). Another. (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=71) One (http://www.rubicon4x4.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/87_2201) of many sources. Many xfers need SYEs, so make sure you know the xfer model (sorry, just a caution).

The plethora of lift kits avail for TJs makes choosing difficult. Rubicon Express (http://www.rubiconexpress.com/) makes good ones, but I don't know if the best. Good jeep forum search or thread ?. The lift kit design must address multiple concerns. Many of the kits make on-road handling worse. Crab-walking, buck-boarding, etc. Makes me appreciate leaf springs.

The Nov 05 issue of Four Wheeler has a good write-up on installing a RE lift kit with Nth Degree Mobility (http://nthdegreemobility.com/) parts that complement each other. Looks well designed, has good armor, is expensive and maybe a little heavy.

And Currie Ent makes a great Anti-Rock sway bar (http://currieenterprises.com/cestore/categories.aspx?id=1234) for TJs.

Maybe the LTC should save his combat pay for a TJ Rubicon. He might save money in the long run since he'd have the stronger NV241J w/lower Xfer gears, SYE, and rear D44 from the start.

If you are doing this for one of our boys defending our freedom, I would like to contribute to the build up of his jeep. The least that I can do for him. Send me a PM with an address and I will try to help some.
