Actually, there were 2 Lawn mower racing shows- one at 10:00pm and one at 10:30pm

FYI the next ESPN2 coverage for UROC will be
5 Farmington, NM 10/28/04 4:00pm
6 St. George, UT 11/04/04 4:00pm
7 SUPERCRAWL III 12/16/04 4:00pm

Yes, UROC has hit the BIG time! They are just as important as lawn mower racing. And we all know that the next step up from lawn mower racing is NASCAR

Because its been around longer. I've seen it on ESPN for a number of years already. If you've never watched it, some of the mowers are pretty darn quick.

You have to keep in mind that oftentimes it's not ESPN that's airing these shows. The producers of the shows pay ESPN for the airtime & then they sell the ad space. It's not at all like NFL football or NASCAR where the networks pay for the RIGHT to broadcast the show. Instead, if you want your sport on TV, you pay THEM. And this is why we often see stuff on TV that doesn't appear to have any justification for its existence.

And sometimes, you just see them do weird things because they are trying to appeal to what they feel is a target group. I've used this example numerous times. I recall a particular Sunday when NBC moved the Winston Cup race to their cable affiliate (TNT) and instead aired some BMX bike show from Utah that couldn't have had more than 200 spectators on hand (all of them seemingly friends with the guy who promoted it). My guess was that that was an effort to boost TNT's viewership rather than anyone actually believing the BMX thing "deserved" a bigger audience.

And taking this in another direction, I'm not all that convinced that rock-crawling isn't already over-exposed on TV. From what I've seen, it loses SO much compared to watching it in person. The angles just don't translate well to TV. Now take something like Golf for example. As boring as that is for me to watch, what is taking place DOES translate well to TV. And since so many people PLAY golf, they'll always have a good audience. Rock-crawling OTOH doesn't look as good on the small-screen & I think you're going to have a hard time sucking in "casual" spectators at home in their living rooms. To me, the key to capturing the audience is going to be growing the sport as a PARTICIPATIVE thing. Your target audience on TV is going to be people who actually DO this stuff. Grow that & you're set. Just my $.02.
