I'm going to look at a CJ5 tub tonight, but the owner isn't sure what year it is. I know there are early and late style CJ-5's, what year was the break? Are the tubs different? How can I tell which style tub it is? If I buy it, I'm planning on building a trail jeep, using a box steel tubing frame (like 66CJdean's). Anything I should watch out for on the tub, like notorious rust spots, or other???

wow there are so many slite differnces it is hard but if it has a storage under the pass seat it is 75 and below um the only rusting is in the body mount areas and the floor board from water sitting so hope that helps a little storm:trooper:

the older ones say "JEEP" and the newer ones say "Jeep" unless they are really towards the end of the line then they say "Joop":flipoff2: also, older cj's had the under the seat gas tank.

Wasn't there a difference after AMC bought Jeep, and started putting the inline 6 in them. What year was that? Was the extra length added in the hood and fenders or in the cowl? I'm not concerned w/ the small differences, I just want to know if it is pre AMC or post AMC.

If it is pre 72 then the fenders and hood will be shorter. If you look at the fender the opening of the fender will end right at the tub where the post 72 ones will extend about 4" before the fender meets the tub. If you are going build a frame then it really doesn't matter the year since you will put mounts where you need them. Since all CJ tubs are a pile of crap I welded on a sub frame to the tub and then just made mounts that went from the frame to the sub frame.

Well, I think it is a pre-amc tub. It said JEEP and had a tool box under the pass. seat. The VIN plate is missing. Will I need to use a pre-amc hood & fenders, or would the later hood and fenders work with this tub?

If your building a frame anyway then u could use the later style fenders and hood with no probs the tub is the same size and dimentions the frame was just shorter on the pre AMC.

If you are looking at a bare tub, I think you can tell by where the brake MC was mounted. On the AMC's it was mounted on the upper firewall. Willys/Kaiser had it under the pedal.

Not necessarily. The '72-75 tubs had the toolbox and were AMC Jeeps. It really doesn't matter if it's pre-AMC or not, the tub length and width is the same. The '72 and up (AMC) fenders and hood will bolt on to '71 and older tubs. I have '84 fenders and a '72 hood on a '63 tub.
