Whats the carrier break in a 28 spline EB carrier? I have a carrier that has a ring and pinion with 4210 stamped on it(so 4.20s). Will 4.56 gears fit this carrier?

there is no carrier break, you can run any ratio you feel like on any carrier you feel like.

Good deal. Next question, can i run a 31 spline mini spool inside a carrier with 28 spline spiders when removed? Also, are big bearing and small bearing shafts the same size? Anyone got a yoke for the 9 inch laying around?

Anyone know the answer to this?

Well, I converted a 28 spline Detroit to 31 spline by changing the couplers (side gears) so maybe the mini spool would work:confused: I know that the 31 spline shaft diameter is 1.31" I believe the 28 spline shaft is somewhere around 1.12" (at the splines), I'm not sure of the exact size but, it's considerably smaller........Hans

Okay, I read that question wrong:rolleyes: The big bearing shaft is bigger in diameter at the bearing mounting surface and in case you were wondering, I don't believe a 31 spline shaft ever came in a small bearing version......Hans

you can get bearings to run a 31 spline shaft in a small bearing housing. Look up Wild Horses 4x4.

As far as the mini spool install goes, get a 31 spline carrier. The 31 spline axles will not pass thru the 28 spline case, although it is possible to swap the 31 spline mini spool into the 28 spline case. The only reason I know this is because I did the same thing. If you absolutely cannot find a 31 spline carrier, you can have the holes where the axles pass thru machined to the larger dimension. Hope this helps.

Thanks..thats what i needed to know:D and by "machined" do you mean "dremel-tooled" :flipoff2:

Edit: And yes, I am cheap.

machining would be better as it keeps the dimesions accurate. 31 spline carriers are very common as they came in 1/2 ton trucks from about 75 thru 86.

not to try to sell you some stuff, but i went from 9" to D60 so i had lotsa stuff lying around from assorted 9" that i have had. i have a 31 sp carrier. i have a partial third as well. i dont have the C shaped clamps that hold down the carrier. i also have a 9" housing too. in the 9" housings, i found that there are 2 versions. you can tell the two by the size of the studs that bolt the axle bearing flange and backing plate. i dont know if there are any differences in the shafts that fit these two different housings or not. but in my 79 i found the small bolts on the housing and i read that they were only commonm in the 78s as something carried forward from the EBs. but then in a parts bronco i bought that was either 78 or 79, dont know which year, i found the bigger bolt pattern. which is weird if you think about it. but either way, if you need parts i will give them to you cheap.
