Well, all the above works. I have used all methods included stiffener bars. I used 3x3 angle between wheelwells, chanel in locations, plate where needed, and also tubing and bushing going from one side to the other.
strengthen against impact. or strengthen against forces from wheeling? If you want to simply protect the underbody from impact, plate it. If you want to really make an XJ last, plate it and tie a cage into the new "sub frame" you made when plating. This is the only way to really make an XJ last under real use.

Check out NAXJA or search on here.
or take a page from the hydralic homies. Take some paper and a crayon and fold the paper on the unibody sub-frame. Next take the crayon and mark the edges and then cut the border of the crayon off the paper leaving you with a template. Take the template and tape it to a piece of steel and mark the steel with a soapstone. Cut the steel with a plasma or torch and start to weld the piece onto the sub-frame. As your welding heat and reheat the piece to bend it around the forms of the unibody sub-frame. When you are all done you should have a hell of a frame.

Plate everything. My buddy used a piece of angle and did it along the frame rails. Thought is it was all good and the sweet unibody bent in the 4 inch section the the angle wasnt there.

Build a subframe and mount hte body to it, then mount your suspension to the sub frame.
