I was talking to a Jeep mechanic, has done some axle work for me, probably the best guy in the area when it comes to gear set-up and tranny work. He mentioned to me that in early YJ's, 4-bangers, the T/C had a lower ratio than 2.72:1 and he believes the gears fit in a late model 231 T/C. I tried searching, but I suck at the internet, and didn't find anything. I was wondering if anybody else has heard of this. It was only in the 4-cylinder models from what I understand. TIA

I call B.S. I have numerous YJ's, 4cyl and 6cyl. Autos, 5 spds, I have only ever seen two transfer cases in a YJ, the 231 with 2.72:1 gearing and the 207 which has a poor reputation but the same ratio. I have only found the 207 in 4cyl 5spd models of YJ's (some other combo's in XJ's) and only in 1987. Either way, I have never found any other ratio. Just aftermarket changes to the 4:1.

Maybe he is mistaken and thinking about the axle gearing which was 4.10:1 Otherwise, I second the B.S. call.

The 207 has a little higher low ratio than the 231, 2.6 something:1.
