: finding a way to use my turbo 400

Ok here's the deal... I have a turbo 400 with a long output shaft. originally from a 2wd caddy. the tranny shop wants 675 to put a short one in because they say it has to be rebuilt. I just want to switch to a shorter shaft. The goal is to do this as cheap as possible. And here are my questions/possibilities. Can i adapt it somehow to use a dodge divorced 205. The other possibility is to use my muncie sm465 that i have lying around. I have a bell housing adaptor for that one as it is currently bolted up to a chevy 350. But there is a problem, as always, the bellhousings seem to be different between the turbo 400 i have for the caddy and a turbo 350. In simple terms: i don't think i can use the 350 bell housing adaptor and use the sm465. But i want to know what someone who reall-y knows what they are talking about knows. I have to buy a T-case eventually for this set up so i'm not married to one type of t-case. I would prefer to go to a NP205. So does anyone know the output shaft counts on the NP t-cases? Thanks for anyone's time who can fill me in and buy me a clue.

ok,,here's the deal,,i think,,

Why would you not be able to use your SM465 if it is already bolted up to a chevy motor ? are you trying to bolt this to a different make motor ? if so then no,,it will not work.

the TH 400 you have from the caddy does in fact have a different style bell houseing than a chevy TH 350,,these are the 2 hump's or recesses at the top of the bell housing which move the bolt holes to a different location.

also,,to replace the shafts you do need to have the tranny rebuilt somewhat from what i understand,,their are a few different parts between the short and long shaft trannies.

your post is somewhat confusing but i hope this help's you out some.
what motor are you trying to bolt this to ? and in what vehicle?

Your post is a little confusing....Are you running a chevy 350 motor or a caddy motor? If your running a caddy motor you can use the tranny, if a 350 you can't use it...
The price the tranny shop quoted for a rebuild is about right, in order to convert a 2WD TH400 to 4WD you have to tear the tranny completely apart. Might as well rebuilt why you have it apart. No matter though, you won't be able to run the tranny any way.
Do the 350, 465, 205 combo, its the easiest option for what you have. All the parts you have should be a bolt in... If you need more detailed info go to the Colorado K5 site.

you don't have to rebuild your 400 to change the output shafts. if the trannie is in good shape just tear it down and swap in a 4wd output shaft. once you tear it down you will know if it needs a build or not. i just did this with a th350- converted from 2wd to 4wd. the clutches and everything looked brand new so i didn't mess with em. so far so good the trannie runs fine. only took me an afternoon.

to put that 400 to your 350 sb you will need a BOP adaptor plate(jegs has em) if you are running a cad, right on!
