Anybody have any good advice on trimming fenders on a Scout II:question: I need to make more room the the bigger meats I just put with out lifting it . Also i'm looking at a set of 38's for sale that I want to put under the Beast so I'll definatley need more clearence for those. What can be done to the front fenders?

I've been looking at cutting out the inner fenders up front and trimming a few inches out of the fronts. Then modifying some sort of inner fender to keep dirt and crap out. What do you guys think? Any advice or pictures is helpfull. Just gotta keep the tires off the damn fenders.:smokin:

I removed my inner fenders from the radiator support and just used some 1x2 square tubing to strengthen it up and bolt the fenders to, and even in the mud with 36" swampers i don't get anything on the engine. I'am planning on running the 38x12.50 SX's i have and don't want to lift it any more allready 2 1/2 lift skyjacker springs, spring over and 1" built into my RS, so i am in the process of opening up the wheelwells to fit the 38s with no more lift(i have done the front), i sectioned the fenders moved the opening up 3" and opened them up 2.5", thye still have the factory lip on them so they allmost look stock just bigger, I took to fenders to make one. Next is the rears they will be 3"s larger all the way and will be tubed using 73-87 GM truck wheel tubs ($15.00 each brand new and heavy guage).

Ahh.. a body man chimes in!

So you cut the factory mounting lips off and moved 'em up and re-attached? You said you removed the inner fenders tho'..

I'd like to move the (front) wheel openings up to the top of the inner fender shelf, but with the double-fender I'd also like to keep the inner and outer attached if at all possible.

At the same time, the radius needs opened up, too.. sheesh. :)

On my race truck, I run no inner fenders and a tilt front clip.

Need more tire clearance? Re-radius the outer fender with the metal removing tool of your choice.

Doesn't do much to keep the mud off the engine though..

How big are the Chevy wheel tubs (lengthwise)? Do you get those from GM or an aftermarket supplier?

I'd like a 40" long tub. I think you can fit that without relocating the filler neck or seriously altering the center body mount assembly.

For now I'm just going to cut down and back from the rear wheel wells to remove the curled under portion of the quarter.. then adjust the bump stops slightly to keep the 36s out of the sheetmetal.

I also like Scoutillac's trapezoid diamond plate tubs - gives a nice flat surface for mounting your  cooler or tools..

'68 - 72 Chevy/GMC fenderwells are 38" long front to back not counting the mounting lip. That's what I'm putting in mine, mostly 'cause I have a pair.

TERRA-IZER,

Can you post some pics of the front fenders? I already cut off hte little lip in the front and they still rub there. Are you gonna move your front axle foward at all? I would like some sort of inner fender too keep mud and crap off my engine so I dont want to take it out completely.

Yep, i cut the lips off and moved them up, acutlly removed the lips buy cuting it out in a square about 1" below the body line, cut it in half and removed 3"s from the top of the square and then welded them up in a higher location, And the 73-87 GM truck wheel tubs are 41 1/2 edge to edge, and GM wants $60-70 for new ones, i get mine from a after market Auto body panel company in Denver, JC whitney also sells them for around $15-20. I will post pics once i'am done, I have only roughed them in so far. Hopefully i will have the fronts and backs done by this years EJS, but first i have to finish the paying customers trucks.

Brandonw, i moved my front end about 2" forward when i did the RS years ago, and also moved the rear back a inch.

Did you lengthen the frame up front or did you just redrill the centering pin? I was thinking of lengthening the frame a bit and using some chevy 2.5 in. wide springs up front and moving the front axle foward.

I used 3x4 square tubing for my spring towers and welded them on the frame so about 3/4" is sticking out and drilled the spring bolt hole towards the front, on the rear i redrilled my centering pin hole on the main leaf, and moved the rest of the pack.

Thanks for the ideas TERRA_RIZER. I need to trim the fenders as much as possible. Went wheeling yesterday and sliced one of my swampers on the fender, cut it pretty deep:( . I dont know if it will be covered by the road hazard warranty from Discount Tire.

So I could Take my '72 Blazer Tub and cut out the inner fenders and use the Lip of the outer fenders to open my fender up??

Hmmm now that's a good idea since I was gonna send the Tub to the Junkyard after I stripped it anyway.

I cut quite a bit of unnecessary front fender. Im gonna roll the front portion underneath the blinker cause I couldnt quite get in there for some reason as you can tell. I like it I think it looks really good, even better once I clean it up. The inner fende kinda got in the way so use a long blade.. http://mediaservice.photoisland.com/auction/Feb/2002248792967979272174.jpg

What kind of trails do you run and how do you like those Mickey HPs?

I bought a set (for the wheels, the tires came with 'em).. 31x10.50 Baja HPs. I'm NOT impressed.

Ran 'em on my race truck for a short while until I found my 31x15.50 Terras.

They sucked on the street, too... grab every darn rut or groove.

Currently on my GF's manual steer 800.. talk about skittish... but she wanted to have matching tires (vs. the 4 old 16" 5 lug wheels with 4 different style tires.. with radial n' bias mixed in for good measure)..

Is it safe to re-drill your main leaf?

Get a chance to take some pics of the fender mods yet?

I felt the urge to see what it might look like...

Stock w/ 4" Skyjackers, worn 36" TSL:

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/pic03.jpg

Then I cut n' pasted.. moved the arch up. I think the inner fender shelf is right about where the "break" is in the body..

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/1_9_2002/cut_fender_mockup.jpg

Does that look about right?

I left off the rocker area and the bottom of the front (turn signal area). Just moved the arch itself up.

Obviously something would need to be done in the lower right (rocker area) since the inner and outer fenders are bolted together there as well.

For the lower front (left) the inner and outer are not bolted together there - just sculpt the outer fender to taste.

So.. cut the inner fender out in a rectangle / U-shape just above the mounting flange.

Slide it up until the remains of the outer lip come in contact with the inner shelf. Weld back in place.

Cut outer fender in about the same spots, slide it up about the same amount, re-weld, bolt back together, and apply rattle-can band-aid stripe over the welds..

TSM1mt the hieght is about right, I cut the arch in a square like you but also split the square in the center and added 2 1/2" into the center, and cut the front part of the fender to match, so my wheelwells are 3"s taller and 2 1/2"s longer. I acuttly took 2 fenders to make one and cut the inner rocker back acouple of inches, i had acouple of of old worthless fenders (to much rust bad dents on corners) and used the arches off of them to make the 2 1/2" differnece.

They sucked on the street, too... grab every darn rut or groove. yup! that about says it all. Mine were free, takes a little more OOMPH! to get them up a rock wall. I would never buy them! Problem is Im stuck with them till I can get my D60's slung under, Ive got a set of 33 BFG A/T for the 16in 8lug wheels, so Im not puttin any more $$ into my Scout till that gets done. SIGH! Theres too many things I need to get done & not enough funds. I want to get my 1ton axles under, 38 swampers, header w/new exhaust in & my other ScoutII body swapped on in time for RMIHR!

I think (in the pic) I moved the arch up too far. I measured about 2.5" that I can take out before I have to get really creative about what to reattach the inner fender to - the "shelf" is about 2.5" up from the lip at the moment.

I could angle the shelf up, and/or build up from it to give a place to attach the inner lip back to.

I like the "stretch" idea, too. And I might have an extra fender or two in sad shape. I threw out most of the "junk" sheetmetal (too bad, the trashed fenders off my racer donor body would've been great) but there might still be some at a buddy's place. (on second thought, I think I gave the bad metal to him instead of throwing it out.. LOL)

Cut it in the middle, then cut a chunk from the donor about 1.25" on either side of the middle. I'll have to look and see where the bolt holes are and try to match things up so I can still bolt the outer and inner together..

Seems like a plan. Heck, might even be able to *do it* too. ;)

My new tires showed up today.. I knew the other pair were thin, but.. The front will need some trimming, and since I now figure I'll be ordering two more before long I'm going to need to get after the rear tubbing sooner than later.
