I am new here and doesn't have much knowledge on cars although I own a 1.6L 16V '94 sidekick, i've been browsing the past posts and keep reading about EGR, Idle Air Control, PCV, VSV and ISC. Can anyone post a pict on these parts with tese midel? I really want to learn to do minor repairs on my car to save cost especially nowadays...

Well, the guys that have the answers are not in, so I guess I'll take a stab at it. I don't have fuel injection and I don't have a sidekick, so beware.

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation; works to combat NoX, dilutes fuel/air mixture with inert exhaust. Doesn't function ALL the time, maybe in 5th gear or sumthin, under ECM control. You can live with it, it won't hurt you. Some engines ping like crazy if you take it off.

Idle Air Control = the is the old idle speed screw, but computerized. The ECM (Electronic Control Module, aka computer) controls it. It is on the throttle body. It isn't a screw like before, though, there are different kinds. Commonly they are a stepper-motor/solenoid controled screw that opens or closes the ide air flow in a precise manner. This air flow (I think) is by-pass air, not a flutterby valve that gets propped open, like on a carb. The ECM senses the additional air and adds appropriate fuel.

PCV = positive crankcase ventalation; prolly under ECM control, now it is part of the smog system, its a good thing, sucks blowby and fumes out of the engine, routes it back into the intake to be burned. Keeps oil from being diluted with dissolved gas, raises efficiency, lowers smog big-time.

VSV = vacuum switch valve; a type of valve (IIRC) that switches vacuum on or off. Sometimes these are electric, sometimes activated by heat. Generally a carburated system has more than one in there. Most cars have one somewhere. I am not 100% sure on this, I'd check the manual. I have a manual on-line, I could check, but I'm going to beddy-bye.
