: toyota in deep water.

first off, its an 88 toy 4runner, 4 cyl. with a fairly new engine. the entire front half of the truck went under water. we spent the last 2 weeks getting the water out of the block and just drying out in general ect. it has spark, the intake sucks in air and it all smells like gas. but the engine just turns with no detonation.

my first question is the engine codes, we pull 12, 13 and 51 off the comp. from what i can tell 51 is the tps but any additional info would help. not the big deal...

but the main problem/question is that gas getting mixed up in the oil. changed the oil twice with the same outcome. does this mean the compression is bad? or just a seal? or is it tottaly fawked?
im not sure if he tried turning the engine over while there was still water in the block, but i think the starter was froze, hopefully....
any thoughts to help this noob out would be appreciated...

Could it be possible that you got water in the gas tank? We submerged a 86 4runner to the roof for about 15 minutes up on fordyce. we drug it out and pulled the plugs, pumped the water out of the cylinders and drove it the rest of the trip. about a week after that, it quit running. it had spark and smelled like gas. after we drained 1.5 gallons of water out of the tank, it fired up. still hard to start but runs.

When you went into the water, how high were the RPM's???

the gas tank didnt go under water fortunatly. only the front wheels went down and the water came to about the bottom of the dash. what little gas was in the truck we either shot out of the block :nuke:  or it leaked into the oil.

it was low rpm, probably almost idle speed and the engine died almost imediatly. this wasnt a subtle thing, it went ka-plunk to the bottom.

after this long im starting to think its the ecu, but i still dont know what the deal is with the gas leaking into the oil.

I bet the AFM is full of water or got full of water and is shot. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing this could result in the ecu being sent a message to dump far too rich a mix into the engine. Add the rich mix and no spark happening and the gas is liking washing down the cylinder walls and into the oil pan.
Borrow somebody's afm and swap them out and see if that makes any difference. The contacts in the harness leading to the ECU could be wet causing problems too. I read on here recently that somebody with rainy weather problems shot CO2 into the plugs to dislodge any moisture and that fixed their problem.
The ECU could be shot, but it seems like if it is still alive enough to throw codes perhaps there is hope.
Just the opines of a newbie dumbass so take it for what it's worth.

i second the ECU, i bet it got wet and packed up, you can find them cheap on ebay. there located in a poor spot. With some fighting you can zip tie it up behind the glove box by just cutting back the orginal electrical tape and re-taping it.

Umm in my experience gas in the oil is a very bad thing. I did the same thing u did and ended up having to get a new engine because i had actually cracked two cylinders. It was in a 94 Grand tho. Gas poured down into the oil

so you sucked some oil......why don't you take a compression test. Sounds like you might have something not going good in the lowerend.

check ECU, AFM, and sounds like the bottom end is sloppin too much... threw a bearing
