howdy everyone!
I just bought a 80 scout 2, it has terra on the truck, (What does that mean? ) It has the blue nissan 33d turbo motor, with 90,000 miles on it, some rust in the corner panels, but other than that it is pretty solid, my first question is that it smokes alot :smokin: , where do I begin with my diagnosis of the problem. It did sit for like 10 years with sparratic use. Next, I would like to know the value of the vehicle, I purchased it for $400 dollars, I am located in Georgia, and have a clear title back to the day it was purchased which makes me the second owner. I would just like some advice on where I should go from here either restore it or sell it?
thanks

where do I begin

www.binderbulletin.org

They even have a diesel specific forum there, and should be able to answer just about any Scout specific questions you've got.

An 80 is a prime year. The front axle actually has caster, and there is a chance it's got a Dana 300 transfer case. Sounds like a good truck. Does it still have the Terra half-cap on it?

May also have the wide ratio T-19. :D That and a Dana 300 transfer case means you stole it.

They all smoke at start up for awhile. If it sat this long start with fresh oil and fuel then let it smoke till warmed up and see how it goes.

If it's an 80 it should also have the SD33T (for Turbo). Sounds like you wound up with a real turd on your hands there. How bout I come down there and relieve you of it so you don't have to worry about it anymore? I'll cart it off for nothing. :)

Oh, and I thought we agreed only the close T19 was available behind the diesels?

That's news to me. My friend Jim has an '80 Terra that had the SD33t with a wide T-19 and D300 from the factory. We yanked the wide and stuck a close T-19 in there instead since it is a road rig.

Oh, and I thought we agreed only the close T19 was available behind the diesels? Nope I can't agree to that because Wagonmaster has an 80 diesel Terra with a T-19 WIDE and a Dana 300 soon to be changes to a T-19 close for street as well. His father in law was the original owner and says it's never been changed.

Ummm......don't know where you got this idea, in fact I posted a sales brochure picture on HERE showing the wide was a stock option for the diesels. I guess numerouse people saying they have seen/driven them wasn't enough

OH well!

All right! Jesus! I guess I'm recalling a thread from another board (ahem...BB...) where that was the general consensus. Having never owned one nor cared, I took the word of people who had. I stand corrected.

But I'll still take the truck off your hands...say, $50?

Darel Unfortunately there is a ton of information there on the Binder Bulletin most of which is good information and another ton of opinions all of which had better be the same to fit in or you'll be ridiculed. Also don't try to change or update any tech information. You'll be treated as though your trying to re-write the bible.

I check in alot over here, don't normally post but, I think I know the truck you bought. mostly black terra for sale in lilburn ga. by dixie crawler equipment? If so, yes it's a 1980 turbo diesel, t-19, dana 300 and 3.73. I think the ac even still held pressure. Good score, I went back and forth with the owner a couple times over a year. I could only get him down to 750, nice work.

The truck did come from dixie crawler equip. he was going out of business or moving or something like that. I drained all the fuel, found a local shop to rebuild the waterpump and alternator for $100, I got cruiser connections, and changed the oil to 20w-50 (Is this correct?) and it stopped smoking. With all that I have gotten posted about the truck it sounds like it is a beast. Maybe some tractor tires are in order :grinpimp: , appreciate the help.

it doesn't have the cap but it has the moss on rust paint job to make up for it

So, does it have a 118" wheelbase, or 100"? I'm guessing 118".

small world, 20w-50 is okay for now but, most prefer an actual diesel oil. Great score, I'd love to have that truck. and yes it's 118" wheel base.

When the weather gets cold, the smoke will return in force but dont worry about it, it's normal.
