: powersteering pump Q
rockthedog 10-25-2004, 07:23 PM this was the first year wheeling the 38.5's........they are awesome but the obvious problem was the straining steering.(screeching  )
is there a particular pump i can put in out of P&P that will work, truck or otherwise, or am i gonna have to throw down for one of the aftermarket ones.(i'm assuming mine is not up to the task)?
i have other winter projects to budget for , but the steering has to be dealt with :shaking:
i have a saginaw 3.5 or 3.25 (whatever) with 4x4 labs high steer......no cooler YET.
anyone out there running 38,s with stock pump / box settup......if so whats it out of?
thanks
glenn
woody 10-26-2004, 05:12 AM do the pump tweak at http://www.westtexasoffroad.com - big help, but really, hydro assist will be the best long term cure. With Luke's arms, a 8" stroke 1.5" diameter ram works great, mount one side on the pumpkin, and the other on the DS rear of the tie rod. (well protected there)
peesalot 10-26-2004, 12:38 PM Glenn , you big baby , how can you hear the steering pump squeal over the pinions snapping. :flipoff2:
Don't remember undue squeal on tape ?
Do the mods woody mentioned on your existing pump and get a cooler .
I will send you a pic of my cooler , mounts easy , fits in engine bay so you don't have to pull radiator if it leaks. costs 50 bones from summit , it is a trick little billet deal.
Can you say Orion , and a spare third with new arb in it all ready to go , he he he he he he he he he , and a spare open third all readt for Glenn .
the dude 10-26-2004, 01:08 PM Woody, do you have pics of your set up? I am still trying to figure out the best positioning with the 4x4labs arms. I am problably going to go with 6" stroke piston off of my "drivers side" of the 61 in front of the axle. I have long arms on both sides. But would like to see yours as well.

I have a 6" ram at home, used for one event, but decided I didn't want it sticking out in front of the axle unprotected....very pleased with the setup now.

you dawg...........flaunting your orion :D
there was some pump squealing on the tape, but there was alot going on off camera :(
i'm gonna try the red neck ram mod to the pump......pretty wild, removing that shim does that much
change ........... the ram setup will prolly come after that :D
brian, you notice alot of change from that mod.?
john did you do it too?
thanks guys

Erik D_lux 10-27-2004, 02:23 AM If your pump is squeeling its a belt problem not a pump problem.
If its whining, or groaning then its the pump.
woody 10-27-2004, 05:19 AM I did notice a difference at all but very low idle speeds....install a smaller diameter pully and tha'll help as well.
