Anybody know the torque specification for large bolt that screws in to the sm420 output shaft to retain the transfer case input gear? GM manual says "torque to specification, but doesn't say what the specification is.
Does anyone know the web site that showed how to adapt the 4speed transfer case shift linkate to the sm420? It looked pretty easy, but I forgot to bookmark it and I can't find it anymore. Any other slick linkage ideas?
Thanks

hows this for torque rating...AS TIGHT AS YOU FAWKIN CAN!
--- thats what i did any how. you dont want it comin loose. use some red lok tight too. and crank it!
What adapter and t-case are you using?
I took my 4 speed shifter linkage and put it on my 3 speed t-case. Then I notched the 4wd/2wd shift rail that goes onto the front output so the 4 speed linkage would activate it. I had to bend the linkage into the notch. I will see if I can get a picture in the next day or two. It was not the best way, but it has worked for a few years with no problems.

So how about this:
1) What is the maximum torque limit for a 1/2 inch, grade 8 SAE bolt? I don't want to snap that sucker off.
Also:
2) Why does red Loctite come in a blue tube, while blue Loctite comes in a red tube?
Some things just don't make no sense.

Hey Dude, that web site is IH8MUD.COM go to technical links and scroll down to transfer case. you will see a couple of pics there. i am also righ in the middle of doing tha linkage and am trying to copy what i saw in the pics. As for the bolt i talked with the guy who i baught the adapter from and he said to crank it on win an impact, thats just what i did...i also used red loc-tight on it...hopefully it wont come out...

Same reason that you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway!! <G>
Charlie, can I call you in the next week or so about some SM420 questions??

I was more worried about twisting off the head than getting it tight. Ever done that with red Locktite? It's not fun.
I did some searching and I finally found a web page that lists the SAE torque specs:
http://www.brakeproducts.com/ajax-uj/p29.htm
For the 1/2 inch x 20 bolt, it is 120 ft-lbs dry and 90 lubed.
Hey Sean,
Sure give me a call. I'm just about ready to drop it in. I will be in Lost Wages next weekend.

Might have to wait until the weekend of the 17th to call. We're in the last of 3 consecutive weeks of mooching family and friends and their kids in town for skiing vacations (actually, they were all gladly invited - in case they are reading this!! <G>) and will be taking the Mrs to Jackson, WY for some steeps and some heli skiing for Valetine's Day week!!
I'm working up some questions for you, so it might be better to wait until after you drop it in!! Good luck with the install and don't lose too many wages next weekend!!
Thanks,
