I got the busted birf out but now I can't get the shaft out. There isen't a clip holding the shaft in is there? What am I missing or doing wrong? This is on the short side and I have a lockright if that makes a difference. The birfield inner cage is stuck on the shaft with the clip behind it but I don't think that matters untill I get the shaft out.
Thanks

Joseph

Quick red neck slide hammer, tie a rope or strap around the shaft, tie the other end 1-2 feet long to a large hammer(by the head, so you can hold the shaft), get some slack in the rope and pull, same effect as a slide hammer. It works well attaching the rope to a vicegrip, and vice griping the shaft. It does not take a lot of force, but more than you can get by pulling by hand. I have used this trick for lots of different situations on the trail. For some reason I will have a slide hammer with me when I need it.

Do not try to kill it, light tugs, a few times. I do not want you to have your teeth knocked out by the flying shaft.

I just say Woodys post and realized the shaft was not stuck in the housing. If you are talking about the birfield, or the star, then see Woodys post.

long (36" or so) pipe and a block of wood...set the pipe on the wood, hold the birf/axle above it, and SLAM that bitch down til it pops free...

IIRC, 1-1/2" diameter pipe....$10 at most any hardware store.

<nevermind....answered correctly once I read it correctly....>

wiggle the pinion as you pull....helps ditch any bind you may have there.

Thanks heavlytlc, I'll go try that. If that does not work I'll pull it out with my brothers jeep :D
Woody, its stuck in the axle housing not the birf, and even though I didn't mention that your still wrong :flipoff2:
Thanks

Ok...thats taken care of....next newbie question.
I'm ready to put the longs and shaft together. How do I get that inner clip onto the shaft while its in the longfield. The longfield is tight and I can't rotate it any. Is it ok to just run the outer c clip or do I need the inner clip and outer clip.
Thanks again

Oh...and installing the inner seal is a PITA, no wonder everyone hates birfields :D

the trick is to compress the circlip on the inner axle prior to installing the long....a hose clamp, just barely tight around the circlip outta work just fine...as you pound the long on, the hose clamp slides down and the clip slips in....remove the hose clamp once the clip is inside the star and finish installing until the inner clip is against the star.

I run without it. I think it is reccomended that you do not so if the inner breaks it is easier to change. Lots of info on this in the mini section.

I'll try woody's trick, if that does not work I'll just shove it in. The outer clip should keep it from going to far into the birf anyway.
Thanks (praying these never break and I don't have to do this again) :D

Unless you have special shafts(300m, cromo) I would mar-tack the inner and be done. I think there is a page on the marlin crawler site about the mar-tack, and tons of posts here.

If you wheel hard enough they will break, and it gets easier the more you do it. Kinda like tying your shoelaces, you reach a point that it is quick and easy, but it costs more than a new pair of laces.

Did the Redneck slide hammer work?

Yeah, the redneck hammer worked. The shafts and longs are together now and ready to go in. Taking a break waiting on pizza though :D These things are a fun PITA though. Their so pretty I didn't want to put them in, but the busted one is way kewler :grinpimp:
Thanks for the help. I'll get some pics up when I finish.
