: Wider wheels for the FJ40?

Hello!

My friend is looking to get new wheels for her FJ40. It's a '78 and has the original, narrow steel wheels with narrow 33" BFG mud terrains. It has a 3.5" lift or so, and it looks a bit top heavy.

She's thinking of getting some new 15x10 Aluminum wheels, and was wondering if the standard say "Eagle alloy 589 15x10" would be fine, or is there an "offset" wheel that is preferable? I'm guessing this wheel will make the truck nice n wide, especially with some 33/12.5R15s. Any opinions on making a wider stance?

Thanks!

Disk brake cruisers need a wheel with a 3.5" back space, or 4" back spacing with a spacer. Personally, I don't like spacers as they put more stress on the wheel studs, thus a greater chance of breaking them. But that is just my opinion.

I think 16" steel wheels will fit with 4" backspacing.

Yeah, I ran 16" wheels with 4" BS and they cleared the discs. Be prepared for rubbing though. I had 4" of lift and they could rub the steering box and drag link, not to mention inside the fenders in the rear. I would use an 8" rim and less BS to give it some width instead of a 10" rim. I would also recommend against using a spacer.

I would go with 3.5" or less. I run 3 1/8" on my 15x8s and don't have any problems.

Since we are on the subject I am about to put 38" tires with 1.5" wheel spacers on my Cruiser. What does anyone think about the stress this will cause on the wheel studs? Has anyone ran into any problems? Thanks...

ryan,

Are the wheels you got now stock ones with the hubcaps? If you get new ones, I am looking for a set of stock wheels for my FJ45...
