: Possible to make '97 10.25 Semi-Floater into a FF w/ '79 10.25 parts?
Rantipole1 11-02-2004, 06:00 PM I currently have a 1997 Sterling 10.25 under my truck, it's semi float with 3.73s and 5x135mm boltpattern. I have in my driveway an 8 lug, 4.10 geared, full floater 10.25 out of a '79 350. Both are drum and from what I've researched, the '97 10.25 can be geared lower than 4.56 (4.88, 5.13, ect.) because of design changes in '93 I think and the '79 is limited to 4.56. My question: Is it possible to make the '97 10.25 into a full floater using the '79 parts to gain the strength of the FF and retain the gear availablilty? I have 42 inch swampers on the truck now and I think I need to go lower than 4.56, esp. if I go with larger tires in the future. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

no.
especially since they didn't make the 10.25 until 1985. You have a Dana70.
huyha 11-02-2004, 06:22 PM That 1997 10.25 is eith an 8.8 or a 9.75. Both Ford axles.
like bremen242 stated, 10.25 started in 1985.
You seem to have a Dana 60 or 70.
So, No, you cannot make your Semi Floating axle a Full Floater with what you have.
Rantipole1 11-03-2004, 12:01 AM No, it's a 10.25, they both are. Anybody know how to attach a pic on here?
Nor Cal Wheelin 11-03-2004, 04:04 AM Sorry guys, but the first year of the sterling 10.25 was 1985.... There was not one made before then..... ever.. :shaking: If you have an axle from a 79 ford 350, then it is more than likely a d-70..... I would throw the d-70 in there and be happy. I would relieve the bottom of the diff housing first though. They have a similar problem to the ((chevy)) Cor-14 rear end.....(not a lot of ground clearance).... Throw the rear end in your truck and call it good....Just my opinion :flipoff2: ... Jeremy
Jrod-13 11-03-2004, 09:43 AM actualy, I'm pretty sure my uncles F-250 is a 84'(could be a 85) that has a 10.25 in it
and no, your 97' doesn't have a 10.25 if it is 5 lug, you have a 9.75, and are simply just confused.
Rantipole1 11-03-2004, 10:55 AM Maybe it's an '89 10.25 but they are both 10.25's, the '89(?) is 8lug and the other is a 5 lug 10.25 but no one has answered my question, is it possible?
82F100SWB 11-03-2004, 11:33 AM There is no such thing as a 5 lug 10.25, PERIOD.
As for making that 9.75 a full floater, well, the spindles are welded on the 10.25 housing, you could cut them off and weld them on the 9.75 housing if they're compatable, but, from what I've read here, you can use late gears in an early housing so long as you use the right pinion yoke...
Rantipole1 11-03-2004, 04:40 PM Yay! Someone finally answered my question. Thank you very much for your help 82F100SWB. I guess I'll just change to the correct yoke on the 10.25 FF to get the gearing I want and swap it in.

I hate to stay that you asked "if a Semi-floating 10.25 can be converted with a '79 10.25", not if you could regear your '97.
Jrod-13 11-03-2004, 07:16 PM yes, please do swap them...
I can't wait to see what happens when you try to put the gears from your 79' dana 70 into a sterling 9.75" rearend..

I wasn't simply asking if I could re-gear my '97, I was trying to find some information on what my options were, ass.
"yes, please do swap them...

I don't have a '79 Dana 70, it's an '89 10.25 FF.
I wasn't talking about putting the 9.75 gears in the 10.25(not D70), you assumed that. I'm going with new 4.88 gears in the 10.25 FF and just not going to use the 9.75 at all.
I don't know why some people feel they must flame me when I was asking for help.
bremen242 11-04-2004, 03:52 PM If you had an "89 10.25FF" why did you say, "have in my driveway an 8 lug, 4.10 geared, full floater 10.25 out of a '79 350."
I'm not trying to flame u, if you don't tell us what the fawk you have and what the fawk you want to do, we can't help you, and we will probably make fun of you, because that is so much more productive.. :flipoff2:
In any case, 82F100SWB is right, as he normally is....
if it was i, I'd put the '89 axle on your truck as they are the same, minus the FF hubs.
Jrod-13 11-04-2004, 07:15 PM and the fact that it took 10 posts to convince you that your 97' 5 lug 10.25 SF, is is not a 10.25, but a 9.75(or hell maybe a 8.8 for all we know)
