: Wrenching progress

Finished up the transmission crossmember today.

Made the crossmember out of some structural channel steel. And just my luck, in order to line it up with the tranny-xfer adapter, it fell exactly between the factory bolt holes in the frame

So, it was sandwiched up to the frame with some rectangular tubing. Nice thing was I was able to protect the bolt heads inside the rectangular tubing.

Now I've just got to get the transfer case bolted up and then it's off to do the axles!

Looks like you still have a lot of work ahead of you?:D what are your plans?

It also looks like you live in the rust belt like I do:D:D

Things left to do:

1. Install transfer case. Would have done that last night, but that NP205 is too damn much for one guy and a single floor jack.

2. Go through axles. RC 60 front from F250. 60 rear from J20. Need to have rear re-geared and locked. Leaving them full width.

3. SOA

4. Tires.

I figure 4-6 full weekends left. The problem is I only get an hour or so here and there. With the wife and kids gone the past two weekends, I got some good wrenching time in.

Oh, and I'm in Ohio. This really isn't too rusty... actually, it's relatively rust free compared to some of the other stuff I've seen around here. Like the Waggy I parted out... couldn't jack under the frame without crushing it.

Not that rusty? We throw stuff away that looks like that out here:eek:   :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

To give you an idea I bought a '46 CJ2A a few years back. It was sitting in a barn in Colfax. Picture where Lance lives but on higway 80 instead of 50. When I got it home I crawled underneath and looked at the tub floor supports and went hmmmm... Willys used red oak for the wood I see. Cool I can use this non sun bleached cherry paint to check the color match. The frame on my CJ doesn't even have surface rust. The restoration of the bottom of my scrambler tub consisted of soap/ S.O.S pads (For the dirt and grease), And a respray.

We should start trading Cali body parts for Rustbelt axles, trannies, t-case, and engines:D

Ain't that the truth!

Actually that frame was rust free until I moved to Ohio. It was my daily driver for about 6 months here. I busted the tranny input bearing retainer on Jan 2, 1999 - the day we moved into our house (was pulling the stuck moving van out of the snow). So, it ran for about a half a winter here, and now it's all rusty. I bought it in southern Missouri. Talk about some Jethro fixes...

Good god u call that rusty!!!! U need to come out to New England and find out what rust really is that is nothing at all. I have frames in the back yard u can completly see though most portions of it. and Tubs don't even ask about tubd they just rot away around here with all the road salt and sand.

Sounds like a great project, I just started mine.

nv4500 6.34
atlas ii 4.3
RC D60 5.13
FF 14bolt 5.13

I am going full width as well. I know I have tons of work to do as well if I am to get finished by April. I havn't even got the trans up yet as I am still debating on a 5.7L motor swap. But the fun of the crossmember and other things are starting to creep up on me. What size tires are you planning on running?

What size tires? Depends on what kind of deals I can find.

I'm leaning towards 37-38.5 Haven't really looked too closely at the specific options. I'll deal with that when I get there. And since I'm running the Ford front, I'll probably go with a 16 or 16.5 inch wheel.... nice thing there is you can usually find sweet deals on slightly used Swampers. 15"ers tend to go for more $

If the thing is inside, i'll come up and help. This 10° crap is ridiculous.

Buy the 16.5" tires, and you can help me test the new beadlocks i'm machining up.

Yep. Inside. Spent all last weekend and most of this weekend in the garage. One gas grill tank of propane will heat it nicely for two weekends.
