So.....did you get everything accomplished that you said you would?

Me? Hell no. I did drop my front 60 off to get the GM brakes installed, finally got the old perches off of the 14 bolt (what a biotch that was!) , painted the 14, and even swung it under the springs. I also welded my front shackle hangers together but I need to grind them down so that they look smooth. I also started measuring for my front hoop/new dash that I am putting in.

How much did you Not get done?

I'm about two 16" wide panels of soffit short. :mad3:

OTOH, I did find a 5th aluminum wheel so I can have a spare on the same style rim.

Almost got the exhaust leaks fixed. I replaced the manifold gasket, doughnut and the flange gasket. I now have a small pift sound verse the tact tact tact sound I've been used to. I'm almost ready to turn the rig over to a shop and tell them I don't want it back until the exhaust does not leak.

Where's the pft pft? Manifold to head, or "donut"?

I've had pretty good luck with the donuts as long as the exhaust is secured and doesn't flop around. Heck, I even re-use the donuts all the time.

In case you haven't figured it out yet.. a 3/8" Butterfly air-impact and a 12" extension work WONDERS on those @#%@#% exhaust manifold "donut" bolts.. that job SUCKED before I figured that one out.

Y'know, you could always go to headers, too.. :D

Hey Joe,

I hear ya on the exhaust thing. I fab'd my own dual exhaust last time. I have block hugging headers with 2" flanges so I bought a few 2" U-tubes and some straight tube and welded my own together. For one thing, it looks like Sh*t. It also has tiny pin hole leaks that I keep finding and welding up. And lastly, with my new flat-bottom design that I am doing, the exhaust needs to be relocated. I am having a shop do it this time. Except it will be single 3" all the way out.

I'm going to guess the exhaust manifold, I need to pull it and take a flat file to it. The flapper is shot and has a crack in it, so I may have it removed if I take it to a shop. I used the foil wrapped doughnut (forget the part number) and I had to radius the mounting surface for it to sit flush in the flapper, used die grinder.

I have a complete setup to remove and install the hardware. Air ratchet w/8 inch for the outer, Air ratchet with 12" wobble extension for the inner. It's still a PITA anyway you go. The upper nut on the inside flange is the killer. Exhaust work is the one thing I dread, I'd rather rewire the entire Scout then deal with the exhaust.

Here is the deal, smog woes. The rig is a 75, still under smog for another 4 years. :( The air injector ports are in the heads so technically I should be OK to run headers, however I get crap over not having an air pump according to the book I should have the system. I know it depends on when and where it was built to determine if it should have the air injectors. So when I get sheet about not having the air injectors I point to the engine and ask where the system should be on my obviously stock motor. Can't do that with heads.

Almost forgot, not Scout related but I have to spend equal time working on the house or I get a lot ol sheet from the wife, but finished mounting lights in the kitchen. Just need to buy two more recessed fixtures for over the kitchen sink and I'm done with the lighting in the kitchen. Regrount the counters, texture the ceiling and I'm done with the kitchen. Then on to the living room, new details in the ceiling, six recessed fixtures, rear surround speakers, texture and I'm done, then on to the front entry.............

Man it's a long list that never seems to end.

I did my front axle warn internal spline hub conversion this weekend. Didn't finish it because it turns out I snapped the driver side stub shaft inside the spindle sometime recently. When I pulled the old hub off, the stub shaft was crooked in the spindle, pointing up at an angle, and had welded itself to the inside of the spindle. I took a nice picture of it. It looked likeWe tried a really big hammer on it, but no luck.

So, I did the passenger side, then swapped the rotor to the driver side hub, installed the inner bearings and seal, outside race, packed the outer bearing, and cleaned up the replacement spindle I grabbed from rusty. You were right rusty, those spindle inner bearings cleaned right up. Now, I just need to get the replacement axle shaft turned down a bit to fit (My chevy conversion, driver side is a little short because the diff housing on a chevy measures different than an IH D44 - so although the axle lines up under the truck evenly, the pumpkin is offset to the driver side just a hair.)

Once the axle is turned down, I can slap it in, and put it all back together. I took lots of pictures of this, all the things folks keep asking about

castelated nuts
tab washers
indexed tab washers
spindle thrust washer
inner bearings
outer bearings
spindle bearings
jam nut
outer axle snap ring

plus, all the misc conversion parts so I will have a pretty good index file to refer newbies to when they come asking. Also, now I have more trail parts I have needed. One complete hub/rotor/outer hub/hub lock assembly, with two sets of inner/outer bearings, races, and seals, all the nuts and bolts, washers, clips, etc, to do a whole trailside swap if needed. Plus, I will have a spare longside axleshaft that fits my housing (and could be used on any scout) complete with axle ujonts. So, those will all go into my bag of goodies,

I dropped my tank and had it cleaned out in a matter of 2hrs. I had it back up with new 3/8 fuel line ran within the next two hrs. Turned it over a few times and CHA-CHING nice fresh CLEAN fuel into my clear-view filter.

I didn't however get the tailight done, but not to worry I figure I can do that during the week. I'd like to finish that before thursday, since thur. afternoon I'm driving my wife down to CO. for some surgery. (Nothing life threatening)

anyway the way things are going (SO FAR) I should have no problem making it to the RMIHR this year. I'm just not sure if I'll be sporting my big axles and 35's or leave it stock till then.

PS: I was gonna start this same thread this morning but instead I got RIGHT TO WORK :p

Funny.. I just ordered a nibbler from HF.. see if it shows up before or after the TSLs from 4WPW.

Interesting bit on *that* transaction.. "We'll beat any advert price".. except when you take them up on the free freight offer.

$170 each online.

I quoted their own ad in this month's 4Wheel&OR.. $162.. and Tyres1's $161..

Still wouldn't deal - gave me some crap about the free freight deal.. (yeah, I know, it's 4WPW.. what did I expect?)

I wasn't in the mood to argue, and even @ $350 for two that's a helluva sight cheaper than the $220+ each Les Schwab wanted..

Well I finally got shocks in my Scout:D Dual Rancho 9012's up front and reused the ones of my old lift in the rear. Also got ot take her out wheeling for the first time after the fullwidth swap, wich was a blast:p But I shredded one of my swampers on my fender:mad: , put a nice big slash right thru the tread. But thats okay thats what the Discoutn tire road hazard waranty is for. Now I just gotta destroy thr other three:emb:

Did you already cut on your front fenders before, or did you slash the tire on the *stock* fender setup?

I eliminated the slashing by notching the "L" lip (from where the inner fender stops, down and forward to the grille area) and then folding it over into a "V".

Keeps the sharp edge away from the tires.

The tires now hit the bottom of the "V" which is just annoying, not tire-threatening.

I still need to open up the wheel openings a good bit for the new tires, but that simple modification made my 33s a lot happier.

Put the 14 bolt under the rear of the Scout; pulled the drums and put the rotors on for disc brake swap. Pulled a 454 at the local Pick-N-Pull. Parted out a 1976 Terra.

I had already cut the lip that comes down in the front of the front fender. When she flexed up the tire was jammed against the sharp edge that was left and slice it went. I also jammed the tire in to the inner fender on the opposite side bent that out pretty bad as well. i'm gonna cut it all out this week so I should have a lot more room when I'm done. Just dont know what I'm gonna do about the sharp edge thats left over after I trim em:question: Think it would be possible to roll the fendres back to make a lip like the stock ones? Be friendlier to the tire.

the metal will bunch up or split,
it's easier to make a templet out of card board, lay it out and snip or better yet nibble some sheet metal, then just tack weld it on. ad big fat rubber fender flares and your done.

I got the driver side filler neck and flange installed. Still have to put some gas in and see if the tank is any good.

Got some of the front end parts for the SOA conversion.

Cut the hideous homemade reciver hitch off.

Cut the holey exhaust off that was welded to the hitch.

Installed new muffler.

Now I can look to see how the new tank will fit in the newly aquired space under the bed.

Jees, it sure seemed like it was a lot more work than it really was.
