Do you think I will see any improvement or have any problems running an MSD Blaster 2 coil with the stock '79 ignition system (everything in the distributer is new)? The echlin coil from NAPA is $32 and the MSD is $34 from summit and includes a balast resistor (I'm fairly sure mine is all original) I think I'm going to order one unless any one has had a bad experiance with the MSD.
Also has anyone used an aftermarket CD Ignition box on one of these engines? I know on most carbed motors upgraded ignition can usually add some power and really help fuel economy.
I think you will see zero improvement
the plugs will fire at the same voltage

The best thing you can do for the ignition on that thing is to ditch the duraspark junk. On mine I use an MSD 6AL with a blaster SS coil, it works great, better throttle response and a little better milage. Use the stock distributor as the pickup for the 6AL and you're off and running. I wouldn't waste time with a blaster 2 coil, I went through 4 of them before I decided to use the SS. Hope this helps.

so you replaced the stock ignition module with the MSD? I was wonder if that was a possibility... I know the stock ignition modules blow ass. My current ignition has shitty spark and everything is new or near new except the ignition module.

For a cheap but, definite improvement over the stock ignition, get a copy of "The doctor's step by step guide to optimizing your ignition" by Christopher A. Jacobs, Ph.D.,E.E. I run a Standard Motor products LX101 module (Mopar unit  ) with the stock distributor and one of his coils, works well........Hans http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=eproduct.asp&N=120+4294924480+4294923453+305489
I would never use a MSD6
there are much better modern digital boxes available for less money

I don't know where you're finding digital ignition boxes for less than the $170 that the 6AL is. Which ignition system do you see the most in racing? People use MSD because it works. I've had mine for four years and have never had a problem, and it's been under water more than a few times.

I know several people who use MSD's with no problems, like any ignition box they do hate heat however. The failed MSD's I've seen were mounted in shitty locations.
