Does anybody have any info on the status of the Coyote Canyon trail (San Diego co) I haven't been there since the closing of the trail half way through. Is it still closed? Is any of the trail still open? Some freinds and I are thinking of doing a camping trip down there and I understand there was some wash out issues. If any of the trail is open, how far up before the closure (I think it used to be the Middle Willows section that was closed  ). Is the upper half of the trail still accessible from the Anza side or is that closed as well? (I remember it did pass over private property) That was actually my favorite section......The Turkey Track, Horse Canyon, Alder Canyon..... :( Any info is appreciated...........Hans

The canyon is still open to vehicular travel all except the section between the upper and middle willows. You can still access the upper end, from the Turkey Track to Upper Willows, from the Anza side. From the Borrego Springs side you can get up as far as Middle Willows. Its about a 3 mile section that is closed to vehicles. I've heard there were some pretty bad floods and washouts this summer so it might be a good idea to call the Park HQ in Borrego Springs to verify that the "normal" routes are still open. If you go in from the Anza side, you can camp over night at Bailey's Cabin.
I've travelled the length of the Canyon with the Hemet Jeep Club's annual Jeep Cavalcade back before it had to be discontinued due to the closure. I miss it too.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I really miss being able to go through there, I used to camp all through there every Thanksgiving. Wasn't it cool when the route through Middle Willows was in the creek, it was like being on a jungle safari, you were completely surrounded by green :D ...........Hans

Well, just got home from a recon mission into the upper end of Coyote Canyon. Man has it changed. One of my favorite campsites in Alder Canyon has been completely washed away to be replaced by a mini replica of The Grand Canyon  The sign for Horse Canyon has either washed away or has been removed (to discourage travel up there  ) and the "Turkey Track" seems kinda of tame now, although it was fairly challenging for my buddy's stock 83' Bronco. It was fun but, we'll probably camp somewhere in the lower part cause there are nicer campsites and more non-wheeling activities (hiking up Sheep Canyon with my pooch :D ). Man, I'm tired, I must be getting old :( Oh, yeah, there was this young guy staying at Bailey's cabin that hiked in and he looked just like that american kid they captured in Afghanistan (beard and all  ) that was fighting with the Taliban......seemed like a nice kid though........Hans
