: Best Manual Locking Hub?
44Runner 02-04-2002, 11:07 AM It is time to purchase hubs for my 44 build up (1980 Waggy front) and I was wondering which hub everyone thought was best. I did a search and was surprised that I didn't find any fights over who makes the best hub. Anyhoo, I need to know, so fight away. I want everyone's experiences with every manual hub you can put on a 44. Any factual technical data would help too. Thanks in advance...
Dave
pcorssmit 02-04-2002, 11:17 AM Apparently you didn't search to hard since there's a thread going on about 44 hubs right now. With that said, Superwinch sucks ass; I had good luck with the old Selectros (no dial, you turn the whole hub). OE Warns suck too. Never tried the "premium" Warns.

Weezer 02-04-2002, 11:26 AM I had a set of those solectros. Lets just say they went:nuke: . Now I am running warn premium hubs and have never had a problem
Triaged 02-04-2002, 12:50 PM I like my Spicers. Even if one does say ford on the dial:confused:
apeters89 02-04-2002, 01:41 PM There is another maker. MileMarker. Unfortunately I have never run these, so I can't help you with experience... just another option.
TJTRUBL 02-04-2002, 02:13 PM I just bought a set of the Selectros with the big knob. Seems to be the only Hub I can get to fit my Dodge D60 front end in my Jeep. The front end originally had drive flanges on it and I looked everywhere for lockouts and Selectros (milemarker) were the only ones that had something for me. Anyone use this style (8 bolts around the outside like a rear full floater). Just hopeing to NOT have them blow up on me. I can still use the drive flanges if I need to.

Gordon 02-04-2002, 02:13 PM The spicer/Ford hubs are all steel on the parts that transmit torque, all the others have some die cast aluminum or zinc. The only problem with the ford/Spicer ones is they have to slide in the splines in the hub, and after you beat on them for a while they won't unlock anymore because the splines get damaged. This is why I switched to Warns, but I have waranteed 2 in the on year I have had them, so for a lot of that time I have been running 1 drive flange, and 1 hub.

I haven't had problems with them yet as long as the t-case is in 2wd or N when I try to unlock them. Maybe I just haven't been beating on it hard enough? I will have to try harder.:D
dirtrod 02-04-2002, 03:27 PM The old spicer/fords are the strongest, hard to use, hard to find..All the others are the same as far as strength, I have a huge box of broken d44 lockouts...I think warn makes them all to be honest...
44Runner 02-05-2002, 08:04 PM Well I ended up getting a set of Warn Premiums for $71, best deal I could find. I think the model number is like 20990. Thanks everyone for your input!
DanCJ 02-05-2002, 09:37 PM When I bought my CJ-5 it had AVM hubs on it. I have never seen these anywhere else. Been running them for 7 yrs. and still no breaks. Any of you ever heard of them?

pcorssmit 02-06-2002, 07:53 AM They are stock, and widely regarded as junk. The good news is '79 still had 6 bolts, not 5 like ~80-86. Make sure the bolts stay tight, and if you have center caps on the front, throw them away as they don't let you see when the bolts are loosening. Although I've had bad experiences with Superwinch 44 hubs, their Jeep D30 hubs have a good rep.
