: 4 inch lifts
WheelingPiazza 02-04-2002, 01:03 PM Ok..
I am pricing 4 inch lifts
SO far I got a price on a skyjacker lift
Thats 784.00 with skyjacker shocks
And Downeys which is 600.00 with doetech shocks
I know on the jeeps you have to install shims inorder to get the pinon angles right on the rear..
Does this hold true for a FJ40 as well?
The downey kit doesnt come with ubolts which doesnt bother me..
Can any provide info on installing one. as far as what I should look for in a kit.
Deep South Cruisers 02-04-2002, 01:42 PM I have a 4x4 magazine that did a fj40 4" lift install last month. They used a TPI kit with Man -a- Fre greasable shackles and u-bolts. It was a very good write up if you can still find it.
for pricing check JToutfitters.com, they have several brands for the 40 in kit form or pieces. The TPI lift fit 35's with no rubbing:D
You missed one
Spring over: dirt cheap, way better flex.
if not then i suggest going with alcan custom springs (very flexy).
i doubt you will need to shim anything unless you go with a longer shackle
WheelingPiazza 02-04-2002, 01:47 PM I am trying to keep the cost below 700 if at all possible.
I would do a SOA but I dont want togo thru the hassles of dealing with every thing related to SOA, I am currently in the process of doing one on my 5.

I AGREE!! however, when I finished my spring over I had close to 7 inches of lift. But that would vary depending on how flat your springs are.
Alcans are bad ass. I was planning on running a set until I got my big tires and had to get atleast 6 inches of lift outta it.
71RCKCRZR RYAN 02-04-2002, 01:52 PM I HAVE A SET OF 4" MANAFRE SPRINGS ..ONE PART # ON THE SPRINGS LOOKS LIKE THE WAGONNER RANCHO # SOMETHING LIKE 440444......

Pin Head 02-04-2002, 02:13 PM As far as I can tell, the TPI "Smokey Mtn., JTO "Pinnacle Engr" and MAF "Safari" springs are all the same. They look the same and they are made by McCoy Bros of Alberta Canada. This company makes a lot of aftermarket springs for different companies. Shop around and see who can give you the best price. Shipping can eat you up, as can sales tax in CA.
Mark '73 FJ40 02-04-2002, 02:48 PM BDS is supposed to make an nice 4"

Dean Price 02-05-2002, 01:40 PM Any spring that is made by McCoy Bros. is horrible. If that is true and McCoy makes them, look for something else. I had springs made by McCoy for my old 72. They were to short, 3 leaves to a pack and stiff as a board. Customer service is bad. I am not flaming, this is just a well known fact in Alberta that McCoy is not to be delt with.I had to learn the hard way. There specialty is big truck springs. They don't care about the small stuff, it is not there bread and butter. They lost there distributorship for Rancho because of the poor quality.
Just warning you
Dean:mad2:
I have run just about all of the kinds of shocks that are available, besides OME and I can say that Hekathorn is crap-ride is stiff as hell, Rancho 5000s are just slightly better-ride is still stiff, Skyjacker shocks whatever brand they really are are crap also-ride is super stiff. Doetsch Tech shocks are also bottom of the barrel- they are super super hard and they just suck in general. That is why I've heard them called Hecka Hard and Doetsch Crap. Whatever you do for lift the best shocks besides any of the really high dollar ones is Rancho 9000's. I can crank them up for street and turn them down for trail and they ride great.
I would not go with Rancho lift because the springs are not very flexy and getting any droop out of them is near impossible. Every Downey I have seen droops one one side and wears quickly. I currently have the Skyjacker 4" springs and have had them on for about 5 years now and they ride great. I get twice the flex my buddy gets with his Rancho springs and I don't have any lean like he does with the Rancho springs either. I think I have a great combo with the Skyjacker and RS9000's and the only thing that I may change is to go SOA. The Skyjacker springs in Petersons February mag are $525 and I think they throw in cheap shocks that you could sell later.
So with the Skyjacker and RS9000 setup your looking at about $800. SOA everybody says is so cheap but if it is done correctly youv'e got to figure $275+ for new shocks, $250+ for cut and turn on front axle, $150-300 for new driveshafts, $100+ for a traction bar, and all of the small hidden things and you are around the same price without the HUGE lift or the hassle and time.
You can fit 35x12.50's with the 4 inch lift and cutout fender flares. I have just fit 37x13 boggers with that lift and a 2 1/2 body lift that I have also had on for about 8 years without any problems.
woody 02-06-2002, 05:37 AM I've got Rancho 9000's on the rear of my pickup and hate them. Used to run Doestch Tech DT3000's, their softer shocks, and those are great. Plus, at $28 per shock, they are inexpensive. I'll be replacing the 9000's soon with those.
DT Pre-Runners are stiffer and fine for the front, but too stiff IMO for the rear. I run DT3000's all around on my FJ40 and love 'em.
How long ago did you get springs from McCoy?? MOST manufacturers ran those crappy 3-leaf spring packs back a few years ago, and only in the last 5 years is a 5-6 leaf spring pack becomming the norm. Spring manufactures just didn't know any better and thought 3 thick and stiff leaves were what was required to maintain a 4" lift.
I've also heard good things about the BDS suspensions, plus with a lifetime no questions warranty, they might be a good choice. Rounded, tapered tips, teflon inserts, and IIRC, a military wrap. (Don't quote me on the last one....lol)
Dean Price 02-06-2002, 12:12 PM I delt with McCoy about two years ago. maybe the three leaf was the norm back then but they were still bad springs. To short was the biggest problem. This truck is getting the Alcan treatment, I hope they are as good as everybody says.
Pin Head 02-06-2002, 02:01 PM I have been trying to compile a list of spring vendors that sell McCoy springs and I have one report that BDS springs are also made in Canada, but I have not been able to confirm whether this si true of whether McCoy makes them.
I have had my MAF McCoy Bros springs for 3 years now with no problems, but who knows? They are 7 leafs on the front and 6 on the back.
sixsranch 02-06-2002, 08:54 PM Dotto on the three leaf pack, Thay suck BAD! there is no flex! There fine if you like tiping over

They are. Great springs, great flex (for SUA) and great customer service.
I run BDS and am satisfied for the money I paid.
Like said before....shock mounting is critical...I need to revise mine.
