: Baja trip.
My wife and I are planning a trip down Baja California. It's not going to be a hard-core wheeling trip as we'll be taking the camper. It is, however, a 4x4 and we do plan to do mild off-roading and beach running.
We are thinking of leaving between Christmas and the first of the year.
Trip could take a week or so.
We're looking for some folks that want to join us as traveling down there alone ain't a good idea.
To give an idea of what we plan to drive, here's are rig.
Steve_in_29 11-08-2004, 10:36 PM I might possibly be interested in joining you on your trip. But to be honest right now it is very tentative. I actually have the same brand camper as you. We picked up our Apex8 a week ago from Brian. It is on an 04 F350 CC SRW 4x4 deisel. What do you think it would cost to do the trip. I know it would vary if I want to eat steak instead of hamburgers so I am just looking for a rough estimate. Where do you think you would be heading on the trip. I don't normaly monitor this board (a friend told me about your posting) so it would be better if you replied to my e-mail. sfu@adelphia.net
I guess it depends on how resourceful you are. There's not a lot of places to spend money there, so it's mostly in the preperation. Could be 800 miles round trip of driving, so there's fuel cost. Then it depends on what you are eating and drinking, time off work etc. It's an adventure :) :D
I've been wanting to do the trip for a long time. It's sounds like a blast!
After reading the article in Four Wheeler about their trip to Baja, I've got a renown interest.
Anybody here done the trip that would care to share a little?
Anyway, I showed the rig I'm taking just to give a sense of the pace we will be taking. If anybody wants to come along with an open top jeep and sleep on the ground or in a tent, that's cool, too.
EMIEVEL 11-09-2004, 04:20 AM JR, give me a call. I used to ride with a tour company down there and know the area well. I can guide you to some places that might not be on the path well known. I worked in Baja for more than a year and never had a problem with locals or police. Baja usually gets a bad rep from people who go down there and act like asshats. They're the same people who get in trouble in the States. Just plan for safe places to camp at night and theft won't be a problem. Most of the Mexicans are not bad or mean, they're just poor.

RockdogzYJ 11-12-2004, 08:48 AM Sounds like a fun trip.. my parents used to have a place down in Loreto at Tripui until the park burned down earlier this year... :( Baja can be fun... We used to drive down there every year when I was a kid...

You guys don't know what you are missing, come on!
Whitewater 12-20-2004, 07:50 PM I was just down there for the B1K. It was the first time I'd ever been to Mexico and I can definitly (damn that word) say that it will NOT be the last. We drove down through TJ then to Ensenada for contingency. Had a few cervezas as some cantinas and walked around. Saw one fight between some locals but no hassles and people were actually very very accomodating.
We then drove east and ended up in San Felipe, stayed the night under the palapas at Pete's camp. Good spot and the garlic shrimp dinner in the Cantina is YUMMY! The night bartender is one cool cat too, day guy was kinda grumpy but the skinny guy makes it hard not to have a good time there.
Woke up the next morning and headed south to find a good spot to watch the race. Ended up just a little south of Puertocitos on a bluff overlooking the Sea of Cortez and about 1/4 mile of the race. The road fell apart about half way between San Felipe and there but the view to the South was freakin stunning. I don't know how far it was but you could see a long ways to the south down past Gonzaga Bay. Watched the race, loving every minute of it and stayed the night there and woke up to one of the most beautiful sunrises I've seen in a long time. I would have loved to head south but the condition of our rental cars had deteriorated and knowing we had a few more days, decided to head back north. We didn't get to far before we cut off to the beach, it was here the trip slightly deteriorated but the stories became far more interesting. I will spare most details but suffice it to say that the sayings are true and do your best to prepare for the unexpected. We spent the day on the beach near someplace that had a name also starting with a P, not a town just a place. The water was warm and it seemed like you could walk a mile out into the water. After replacing a couple tires we ended up back in San Felipe that night (my car on the trailing end of a strap) Back to Petes camp where we decided a night on the town was in order. Got a ride back into town and walked around for awhile then to the Rockodile where we played volleyball with the locals, danced and drank the night away. Spent most of the next day tracking down miscellaneous parts for a Geo Metro. NOT an easy task! Most of the parts we ended up using came from other makes and models but we got the sucker pieced back together, cruised a little closer to town than Petes due to the fact that waaayyy too many people had showed up and the scene was more Pismo Beach than the Baja we had begun to grow used to. We got lucky and ended up having a nearly complete resort all to ourselves -a couple dogs and their pups. Blasted fireworks off and enjoyed our last night in Baja. Split back to San Diego through Mexicali the next morning. I have no idea where you plan to go but I loved almost every second of the time I was down there. I only wish I had a capable vehicle and another week or two. Have a blast and please be sure to let us know how your trip was once you get back. I can't wait until next Nov when I go back!
