: TBI Swap Question - How do I hook up the heater?

Of all the stupid %&^$ things. I'm replacing the 350 in my '82 CJ7 with an '89 5.7 TBI motor from a suburban. Got all the rest of the swap pretty much squared away. Took a look at the heater hoses and now I'm confused.

My old 350 had one line coming off the water pump and another on the front passenger side corner of the intake manifold. The TBI block has one line off the back of the intake manifold and that's it. There is a pipe plug in the water pump where I expected the other hose to go. I think the other line goes to the rad on the newer trucks.

How do I hook this up in my heep? I don't want to modify the rad again.

TIA.

Jon

Oh and BTW - Yes I need a heater. I'm from the Great White North so I use it to thaw out my whale blubber. That way I don't have to build a big fire in the igloo and risk melting the roof.

Loppy hooked his up with some plumbing from Home Depot. I sent him this link, maybe he'll take some pics and answer you tomorrow.

When I put a TBI 350 in my cruiser I had the same problem.
The water pump on the 350 did not have an outlet, just the rear passenger side of the intake. I took the rad. to a shop and had an outlet soldered in the top tank for the other heater hose.
I have since bought an Edelbrock aluminum water pump, it is tapped for a fitting. I think i am going to change my hose to the w.p. instead of the radiator.
hope that helps:rolleyes:

Just swap the nipple from the old motor in place of the plug in the water pump. I did this on my 350 TBI in the Blazer in an attempt to get more heat in the motor in the winter (I still run the big diesel radiator, I just plugged the extra hole in the radiator). Seemed to help.

That's what I'd hoped to do but I wasn't sure if the port on the pump sucked or blew   . I figured if the stock TBI motor had a port on the intake and one on the rad it must feed the heater core from the intake then return to the rad. If it was the other way around the heater core would see any heat until the thermostat opened.

If it worked for you I'll assume that the port on the water pump draws water in instead of pushing it out and all will be good.

Same thing with my YJ and my '88 motor. My water pump didn't have an outlet on it. I bought a new water pump at the parts store and screwed a nipple to it, then hooked it up to the heater core and the inlet at the back of the intake. Works great.

I just replaced the water outlet on my 4.3 with one that also had a threaded outlet. Plumbed the heater hose there.

What they said. :D

Yeah, the easiest is to find an older thermostat housing with the heater core dump nipple on it. I ran out of time for a trip and made an in-line manifold tapped into the top return hose out of threaded galvie. Or you can either buy a new radiator with the dump nipple on it or have one installed.

You cant use the water pump. TBI's are serpantine and reverse rotation. Just hit the wrecker for an older thermostat housing with a nipple. You may need to grind and hone a tad, but it should work. :D

Not trying to bust yer chops, but the 87 & 88 TBI 350's were v-belt. they didn't do the serp til 89.

That being said, the motor he's got IS serp.

I'd think the easiest would be just to add the bung onto the radiator. Wouldn't cost that much, and it would be set up factory style :D

Thansk for the help guys.

I goofed in the original post. My motor is an '88. And yes it's got v-belts (and one serpentine belt for the alternator).

I'll pull the plug on the water pump and run the hose there.

I've also seen a metal coupler spliced into the lower radiator hose with a tee outlet for a heater hose.

My '88 TBI motor is serpentine and I got a replacement water pump that had the plug in the back. I screwed the nipple in there and ran the heater hose to it and my heater works great, even at 0 degrees.
