: 3.9 propane?

:mad3: i am now paying $2 a gallon for 87 octane fuel. this is irritating. propane is actually cheaper and has an equivalent octane rating of 100 to 110. my question then is simply this. has anyone here converted? if so what kind of mileage did you get. and was it worth it or more of a pita?

i've been wondering the same thing. isn't the LPG stuff overseas, and propane the same thing, or am I mistaken?

yes i did search, lots of diesel stuff, no propane for rovers. very popular in the toy community.

Do it!
Since "propane carbs" exist, I imagine they bolt up to a typical 4-barrel manifold, and we know Edelbrock sells them from the Rover/Buick engine.

LPG (liquified petroleum gas)- as used in Australia (and I think europe) is a blend of Propane and Butane (but I'm sure you can run straight propane without problems). It is easy to do a dual fuel setup so you can run either gas or LPG you don't need special carbs to run it, you just need a diffuser ring to supply the fuel (or a simpler setup for a non efi engine) and some solenoid valves to cut of the gas when you switch to lpg.

On lpg you use about 5-15% more fuel and drop 5-15% in power.

There is plenty of lpg conversion tech on www.outerlimits4x4.com

And you guys have nothing to complain about with fuel prices - in Germany, the cheapest (lowest octane) gas/benzin you can buy is 1.2euros/L (or 4.5euros /gal) which is almost $5.5USD per gallon!!!!!

In April, we paid $6.50/gal for diesel fuel in England. Good thing that Freelander got 30 MPG.

Plenty of LPG conversions for EFI Rovers.

Here's one: http://www.lpg-kits.com/

They will not sell a LPG kit to the USA. Get a friend in the UK to buy and post one to you if you go this route.

LPG is more efficient with the distributor curve, weights and timing set specific to LPG. I think the Eldebrock manifold to LPG manifold with a small carburator as backup would be the best scenario. I would have two removeable tanks to have them filled independant of the vehicle. To get around road tax. But I am sure the stationary setup is safer.

 so let me see if i understand our nations laws correctly.
i cannot do the swap to propane and have it pass emissions unless a certified shop does the install?
yea that makes sense :shaking:

I am sure there are "options" - at least there are in australia. I would approach a shop and ask them if you could do the basics and get them to flare the fittings and certify her - might be able to talk you way around the problem.

LPG runs well on my 3.9 for the electrics I just relay switched the feeds from the ecu to the left and right banks of injectors and grabbed the fuel pump power line and put it on a relay.

The IAC gets a bit out of wack every now and again but 10 seconds of idling and it usually works it out. I need to advance my timing a bit for it I have read LPG likes about 12 degress BTDC in the 3.5 V8s so I was going to start at 6 and work forwards from there till she pinged on our 91RON unleaded - After all it is still duel fuel.

How you gonna mount the tank? Not exactly a whole lot of room in a Disco. Those I've seen pics of have a horizontal tank right behind the back seat.

Then again, I'm seeing more and more Discos without rear seats.

behind the back seat would be ok. if still dual fuel, then i could still evade the emissions idiots.
