I am swapping my sm420 and now trying to put the linkage on. I am attempting to copy a pic a saw on IH8MUD.COM. I cut the bellcrank and raised it 3" just like the pic. i also fabricated an extension on the drop arm to the plunger. My question is how do you mount it all up to the tranny. I saw a pic for the sm465 where there was a plate bolted up to the two holes on the tranny and then the linkage bolted to the plate. Will this also work for the 420? it seems that the linkage needs to mount pretty close to one of the bolts that hold on the plate. Also the nut for the linkage is 16-1.50 and is pretty big to fit in the area i need it to be on the plate. any suggestions will help...the pics are from TYM Prillaman in the transfes case section of technical links. http://www.ih8mud.com/

Yes, just bolt a plate on the side of the sm420 to attach the 2w/4w crank to. I used a 5/8 inch diameter bolt, because that fits the Toyota crank, but I am thinking of just making a crank as it isn't much more work and it will fit better. I'm trying to adapt my 4 speed linkage to work.

Thanks for the pics, but i think we have different linkages. Mine is off of a 74. It seems like the distance off of the tranny will be too close to the plunger position. I am trying to use the origional drop arm. do you have a completed pic with the bell crank and drop arm in position?

I couldn't find an easy way to make the original bell crank with the 2w/4w drop work, so I made a new one. I haven't welded the drop arm or the arm for the shift lever on to the crank yet, but this won't take long. I'm going to use 1 inch x 1/4 angle stock for this purpuse because it is stiff. I hope to finish it next weekend.

That looks great!!! did you space out the plate off of the tranny? and did you lengthen the drop arm to the plunger??? do you have a part # for those trick linkages???
