: Anyone pull the pass seat and fab a rack?

Wife says no more 4 wheeling with me for her, apparently I spend too much time under broken trucks when we're in the woods.
I'm going to pull the pass seat and fab some kind of cargo rack. Probably something with a two or three foot high back to help keep the dog in the back of the Jeep (a TJ). The dog has this harness (http://www.buckleuppup.com/products.html) but I don't want her even trying to get in front (no doors). Likely I'll do something with light square tube and expanded steel, wrapping everything near the dog in pipe insulation.

Anyone done anything like this? Pics?

nah, we all have friends, and use the passenger seat :D Just teasing ya. 4wd and Quadratec have a bolt on tube grid that goes behind the driver seat and works on Wranglers, keeping the dog safe and away from the driver area. Check out their catalogs for pictures. Raingler also has nets that attach to the same area, which are more flexible, lighter, and will pretect your dog better in the case of sudden stop or roll, something like this:

Good luck,

MAybe you should spend some time and money fixing your rig instead of making pretty racks so that you spend less time under it in the woods, hmmmmm? You must do some serious crawling with your dog in the back seat......

Why does the dog matter?

What do you have for a rig, anyway?

Rig? I don't have one, why? Would you do any serious crawling with a dog sitting in the back seat, not strapped in or anything? So I don't pad I'll add this ont he back of this one.Lots of people bring their dogs out for cool trails. Unless you got a buddy with you it seems like the passengers will vacate when a person gets into some fucked up position, about that time dogs seem to follow the other passengers. I agree with this. Why would you then want a cage for him? Mostly this was a sad attempt at a flame. I promise, I'll do better.

I agree with Lame just let your dog out. Chances are they don't want to be in the jeep with you. Most dogs don't like to be thrown around.

If you have to restrain them I found an easy way. On the TJ in the back there is couple of loops bolted to the floor in front of the back seet. I ran a rope from one to the other then attached a rope to that rope with a loop. This allows my dog to put his head out the windows lay on the back seat and stay the hell out of the driver seat.

My dog hates being in the Jeep. I am sure this would work for dogs with a few slight modifications. Then maybe a bungee cord holding it all to the floorboard.

He already told you. The dog rides in the back.

Had you bothered to read and understand the post in the first place, you'd know that the dog is well secured in the jeep like this. (http://www.buckleuppup.com/). Its worked fine when we rolled.

I have spent enough time under my rig in the garage that I rarely need to in the woods. I am well equiped enough, knowedgable enough, and nice enough to fix other people's broken stuff almost every time I wheel (usually people whose actions get out ahead of their thinking -- kind of like replying to a POR post you either didn't read or cannot understand). The last time I was under my own rig in the woods was stick welding the muffler back onto the cat after the one thing I let a shop do - the exhaust - broke when their weld failed.

Muffler and cat are technical terms, you should look them up here (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com) before replying.

I was just planning on fabbing up (also a techical term meaning the measuring, cutting and welding of various peices of mild steel) a rack to take up the now unneeded space and weight of the passenger seat, and wanted to build something that would not be a danger to the dog.

Do you have something in mind to go on or in the rack, or is it generic storage space? I'd think something like a Raingler net in the main hoop of the cage would be easier on Lucy than padded tube.

how ironic

Are you that much of a loner that you would never have your wife or a friend in the Jeep with you? Taking out the backseat is one thing, but making it a full width single seater Jeep just doesn't seem to make much sense. For just 1 person you would have plenty of storage. Anything that I can think of would look really out of place in the passenger seat area. Maybe you could make a padded cage near the floor there in the front for your dog?

The big bolted down toolbox in the back - everything I strap on top of that would go in the rack (the welding gear, some small spares, plus front axle shafts, maybe both spare driveshafts, camping gear, cooler). Right now Lucy always leans into the back of the seats for support when we're on the rocks, so I want her to have that some effect with the rack.

Since whatever it is I'll fab will bolt into the seat mounting bolt holes, if I ever want a pass seat again, its just four bolts away.

Seems like the webbing would be a PITA getting her in and out of the Jeep, plus I've got all kinds of mild steel in the garage right now, so the rack would just be my labor.

Do you trailer the rig? What about making a nice rack out of angle iron and then using a few ammo cans in a shelf like sytem. A small suitcase or backpack would also work and give you some flexibility. The back pack would also be easier on the dog if the dog made contact.

I use to carry everything in my rig. Now I just carry a toolbag and a cooler.

Good Luck,

RK

Now that's a good idea. Just a raised shelf topped w/ expanded steel would be a lot easier to fab.

The Jeep is not a DD, but I do drive it to the trails. I'm hoping to buy a tow rig/trailer in a year or so, but I just can't afford it now.

I carry a lot of crap in terms of tools and spares, mostly b/c it does have to be drivable on the highway after wheelin. Two big toolboxes, welding gear (including some steel scraps and an angle grinder), air tools, big C clamp tool for ball joints, spare axle shafts and drive shafts, some fluids, recovery gear....
