Do Comp Cams non-self-aligning rockers require guideplates? I've e-mail Comp, but they haven't replied yet. Thanks, kyle

IM ASSUMING ITS A SBC.....SO

WITH STOCK HEADS,STOCK CAM ,STOCK ROCKERS, THE PUSHRODS RIDE UP AND DOWN ON THE SLOT IN THE HEAD THEY GO THRU....THAT SLOT IS WHAT KEEPS THEM ALIGNED LEFT RIGHT.

REPLACING THE STOCK ROCKERS WITH ROLLERS IS AS EASY AS ADJUSTING THE VALVES....ASSUMING THATS ALL YOUR DOING......NO GUIDEPLATES NEEDED..

WHEN YOU GET A BIG CAM WITH A LOT OF LIFT THE CUP ON THE ROCKER THATS SEATS THE PUSHROD GOES UP AND DOWN IN AN ARC,MOVING THE PUSHROG FARTHER FRONT TO BACK.LEFT TO RIGHT DOES NOT CHANGE.

WHEN YOU PUT IN GUIDPLATES YOU ALSO NEED SCREW IN ROCKER STUDS TO HOLD THEM DOWN,ALSO NEED TO MACHINE THE SLOT IN THE HEAD WHERE THE PUSHROD GOES THRU SO IT WILL NOT TOUCH THE HEAD.....THE GUIDEPLATES WILL NOW KEEP THE PUSHROD ECT FROM MOVING LEFT TO RIGHT

HOPE THIS HELPS:D

i think thats wrong,,
the pushrod's do hold the stock rocker in place,,but if you put in roller tipped rockers,,nothing is going to keep them from running out.you need the guide plates or else the roller will just walk right off the end of the pushrod.nothing holds the rocker arm in place but the pushrod itself on a stock setup,,so you have got to have the guide plates for the rollers.

HUUUHHHHHHHHHH........

WHAT HOLDS A STOCK ROCKER IN PLACE?SIDE TO SIDE.

THE PUSHROD IN THE CUP OF THE ROCKER

IF YOU JUST CHANGE THE TIP OF THE ROCKER WHER IT TOUCHES THE VALVE, NOTHING ELSE CHANGES.
IF YOU CHANGE THE TIP AND THE ROCKER PART IF THE ROCKER ,NOTHING ELSE CHANGES

IF YOU TAKE OFF A STOCK ROCKER AND MOVE THE PUSHROD SIDE TO SIDE IT WONT MOVE .WELL MAYBE A TINY BIT......

IF YOU TAKE THE PUSHROD OUT AND SET THE ROCKER ON THE STUD..YOU WILL NOTICE YOU CAN ROTATE THE ROCKER 360 DEG..

that was exactly what i was saying,,
but if you put on full roller rockers, with the roller in the tip of the rocker where the push rod is setting in the cup on a stock app. then there's nothing to hold the rocker in place.
the question is if he's using the full roller style rocker's, or if he's just putting on roller rocker's with just the roller part where the rocker stud is ?
i don't disagree on anything you said, but if he's trying to put on full roller rockers,,they won't work without the guide plates.
hense the " non-self-aligning ".

When they say "Full Roller" . They mean roller tip. And a trunion bearing at the fulcrum point.

No roller on the push rod end! That will always have a cup.

Guide plates only guide the push rods. They in turn guide the rocker arms.

The rockers I'm referring to are Comp's Magnums w/ only a roller tip. My understanding of full rollers is roller tip and roller trunion.

YUP YOUR RIGHT ABOUT ROLLER TIP AND FULL ROLLER.......

BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWWEN THE THREE,STOCK ROLLER TIP AND FULL ROLLER,THEY ALL INSTALL THE SAME....THEY MIGHT RECOMEND GUIDEPLATES BUT THEY ARE NOT NEEDED.....

IF YOU THINK THINK THEY ARE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY THEY NEED GUIDEPLATES......

IF IM WRONG I WILL BE:mad:  AT MYSELF FOR NOT KNOWING WHAT I AM DOING :D :flipoff2: AND HOW I RAN FULL ROLLERS WITH NO GUDEPLATES AND NOW WITH GUIDEPLATES ONLY BECAUSE A HUGE CAM.........MY MOTOR PROBABLY WONT START TOMAROW:D

ok,if the roller tip you are referring to is on the valve side, and the rockers still have the indent on the pushrod side and they are not larger than 6:1 ( i think )you should not need the guides.
if you are referring to roller rockers with the roller on the tip where the pushrod meet's it then you'll need all the other happy crap that goes along with them.

I haven't seen those either. Anyway, straight from Comp = non-self-aligning roller tip requires guideplates, self-aligning don't. Only took me 3 days to get through to them. Thanks, guys.

O.K., 6:1? Try 1.6:1
A roller where the pushrod touches the rocker arm? How the hell would that work? Go look in a Summit catalog for a set of those.

Come on, you are giving tech advice on roller rockers?

I have roller rockers and guideplates. I am pretty sure they are recomended but if this other guy has run roller rockers without guideplates, then maybe it will be O.K.
