This morning my lights were going dim, and my alt gauge was discharging..So i took for granted I had a bad alternator.Got a new one, set it in, same problem..Damn thought it was an easy fix.. i checked the firewall connections seemed ok, main batt cable seems fine, its an internally regulated alt..Course I coulda got another bad one I spose.. Does there have to be a ground on the alternator? My stock version didnt have one, this new one has a bolt for a ground.. Any ideas? Thanks, Chad

If it is internally regulated, are you running the wires through the old voltage regulator on the fender or firewall? That could be the problem ;)

No this is an internally regulated alternator Curtis, the old one was also ..Im pretty sure I found the problem out..There is a red block on the blue main power wire, its about the size of an m80, maybe a little bigger actually, anyway Im guessing this is a fuseable link of some type right> I spose it went bad..Ill bypass it and repost here in a while, Thanks, Chad:D

Just because something has continuity, doesn't mean that it can carry the amperage.
I would make sure that your grounds are good and secure. The Alt is self grounded through the case..but jump a ground to that grounding bolt and see if that helps. If it makes you feel better, I returned a new alt to Kragens last year because it didn't charge. (1 diode had blown) I had them test the other new ones until they found one that worked. About the 3rd or 4th one finally worked. These are their "Rebuilt" lifetime units that they sell...your very well could be bad.

Not all of them are case grounded. Many newer rebuilt alts run a separate ground because of interference with ECUs and high powered stereos .

Turned out to be the Blue 8 gauge wire going from the starter solinoid to the batt terminal on the alt.. Must have a fuseable link somewhere in it, I jumped a new 8 gauge wire from the SS terminal to the alt batt terminal an its charging fine.. :rasta:
