: Fuel Cell install Question??
RoCkSkuLLz 02-04-2002, 09:46 PM Well I got my aluminum fuel cell mounted in my Jeep finally, the damn things been on back order for 3-months. anyways, I have a quick question about installing the cell.
The cell has two outlets coming out of the top. One is for the main fuel line and the other has a built in flip-over valve. My question is this, I have a Fuel Injected Jeep motor that has a return line coming back to the original tank. Can I just hook the return line up to this flip-over valver outlet? If not does anyone have some suggestion on how do to this? Thanks!!

Go down to where ever you bought this thing and Buy another Fitting for the return so you will end up with Three fitting's instead Of 2 they sell the inserts for fuel cell's
I believe they are 8 an
you need reducer to 6 an for fuel lines
you do know that Fuel Cells are not Smog Legal right ??
Adam,
4x4extreme 02-04-2002, 10:26 PM I don't know if this helps but in the jegs aluminum cell they have 2 outlets in the bottom cap one off and use the other for the pick up and it has 2 on the top one for the return and one for the tip over vent valve make sure you run a line off the vent to outside because gas will get by it and go everywhere
RoCkSkuLLz 02-04-2002, 10:27 PM I'll check that out. I bought the cell from Summit racing, Its the new RCI that fits perfect in jeeps and doesnt take up any room. measures 30x9x12. Just curious but could I actually hook up the return line to this outlet for now?
As for bieng smog legal. aaahh. forget it, who cares! :D They dont check that stuff at my local smog station anyways. hehehe
4x4extreme 02-04-2002, 10:52 PM I think it would work as a temporary fix but your tank will not be able to breath with the return line setup that way
RoCkSkuLLz 02-04-2002, 11:02 PM what about if I used a T-fitting and made one end go out for a vent and the other is the return line?
4x4extreme 02-04-2002, 11:08 PM I would think that 1/2 the gas would then go out the vent and the other half would go to the tank
4x4extreme 02-04-2002, 11:09 PM Would you post a link to some info on that cell Becaus I am getting a new one that is smaller and that seems perfect
Supergper 02-05-2002, 12:15 AM If your tank cannot breath then you will not be able to get gas...trust em I had a vent line get clogged in one of my boats when I was in the middle of the Great Salt Lake:eek: the tank needs to breath:D
Supergper 02-05-2002, 12:16 AM Oh yeah do you have a part number for it...I am looking for the same thing right now:D
Shaker 02-05-2002, 06:16 AM It will work for "driveway" only....get it hooked up the right way before you end up walking......;) :D
RoCkSkuLLz 02-05-2002, 07:15 AM Thanks Guys! :D here is the link to there site. Look on page 4
I Got the Street rod fuel cell or whatever they call it. BTW: Good luck getting one I ordered mine mid November last year and it just came last week :( There a new item and already beyond back ordered. Good luck! :D

RockRover 02-05-2002, 07:56 AM They look great, and the delay isn't that big of a deal...What did you pay for your cell? I didn't see any pricing info on the page...Did you get the powdercoated cell?

killingthemonkey 02-05-2002, 08:12 AM Answer me one question. why a fuel cell as opposed to a standard tank?
RockRover 02-05-2002, 08:25 AM One other thing...What did you do for a fuel pump? Assuming you have EFI, did you drop in an in-tank pump? And if so how did you do it?
Thanks man,
---D
WOLF359 02-05-2002, 09:03 AM Most fuel cell vent holes are restricted, which will cause too much pressure in your return line.
If you hook it up, put a pressure gauge inline and insure your return pressure is less than 5 psi.
Your fuel injection will run way to rich if it's not.
Tim.
Supergper 02-05-2002, 11:10 AM For anyone interested summit has the red and blue in stock for $219.99 according to their cataloge and the Black and plain are out of stock but can be ordered...the black is $219.99 and the plain is $199.99
RockRover 02-05-2002, 12:09 PM Is this the cell your talking about? If it is then it's under $200..
Again, what are you guy's doing for fuel pump install? Are you cutting another hole in the cell, mounting a plate with the pickup and return line in it (like a stock tank)?

Supergper 02-05-2002, 12:29 PM nope thats not the tank...here is a pic from the RCI site:
CJ Lagos 02-05-2002, 12:40 PM hey Rockbuggy,
Sorry I didn't write back to the PM, I didn't know what to say.
On my fuel cell there are two ports down on the bottom on the sump. The aluminum one pictures is the one i've got but without two vents and a sump on the bottom. The two ports I used one for feed and one for return. Not sure how things work when you mount the feed up high.
CJ
RockRover 02-05-2002, 12:55 PM Okay...Last time...Were did you mount the fuel pump? Internal or external? If it's external what did you use? Those baby's can get pricy when they're required to deliver more than 30psi. In tank is the most ecconomical, but getting it mounted in the tank cleanly has me stumped.

--D i have that same fuel cell, and im still confused as to what lines to hook up. the 2 outs are my confusing point. anyone know ? one goea to carb and the other is a return and the top 2 outlets are for roll over vents? anyone. jiMMy
CJ Lagos 02-05-2002, 01:23 PM Yes, the two bottom ports are your feed and return lines. One line runs to your frame rail mounted fuel pump and then onto the fuel injection/carb, the other is just a straight run to your return line off the fuel rail or carb or whatever.
You can't really run an in-tank fuel pump with these fuel cells unless they are designed for it. I looked into using a stock intank fule pump from a TJ but they were too tall. So what I did was left the fuel cell as is and then just used a frame rail mounted fuel pump from the 6Cyl chrylser MPI kit since I was using a TJ6cyl.
Most newer vehicles(96+), don't have separate feed and return lines, they only have one line running to the motor and this line is kept under constant pressure. There isn't any aftermarket frame rail mounted pumps that I know of that can do this. So what I did on my 99 Motor was switched to a 1990 6cyl fuel rail and regulator which gave me separate feed/return.
Good luck.
CJ
RockRover 02-05-2002, 01:44 PM Okay, so CJ (or anyone with EFI and a V8) what pump would you recomend? I've got to hit approx. 35 psi.
Thanks,
--D
The Jerk 02-05-2002, 01:47 PM i run a carb, and a mechanical pump (possibly an inliner one day) i thinkim good to go then, i got all y reducers and lines just gotta hook her up and go! jiMMy
CJ Lagos 02-05-2002, 02:04 PM I'd call up Jegs and ask them, or Summit.
CJ
NE-RokToy 02-05-2002, 02:21 PM Look in junkyards under ford trucks for a cheap inline pump. I'm not sure how much pressure they put out but it was enough to run a freinds TPI 350. He just bought 3-4 of them at once so he had spares if anything went wrong. They only cost him $40 for all of them!!! I would look for these types of pumps before buying anything new. new fuel pumps are Bank

I got mine for 179.00 for the natural colored one but Summit Fawked up and sent me the powder coated black. I liked it so I kept it :D I they cost like 20 bucks more.
RoCkSkuLLz 02-05-2002, 02:37 PM Im using the mopar external fuel pump that came with my MPI kit. Worked great for the stock gas tank so im sure it outa work fine for the cell :D We'll see though. I just ordered another 100 dollars in misc. fittings and steel braided hose. Damn this shits expensive!!!!
jp junkie 02-06-2002, 11:35 AM Okay, so CJ (or anyone with EFI and a V8) what pump would you recomend? I've got to hit approx. 35 psi.
Airtex e2000 will supply up to 95psi.:smokin:
killingthemonkey 02-06-2002, 04:56 PM OK. One more time. Why a fuel cell as opposed to a regular tank?
4x4extreme 02-17-2002, 11:35 AM Rockbuggy what did you do about not having a return hole in the cell ?
I just bought one for my jeep to get more room and I was told to drill the cell.
Jeepmangled87 02-17-2002, 04:53 PM dude a fuel cell offers mutch more ground clearance for rock crawling, thats why on a Yj,TJ, or CJ the fawking stock tanks hangs down really low a fuel cell can be mounted in the back of a Jeep if you ditch the back seat. So now do you understand :flipoff2:
