You will need to put perches and shock mounts on it.
Tie into the brakes and get and adapter for the yoke.
Other than that no big deal :D
As far as lockers, the lockright is like $245, noslip more like $400 and a full detroit is like $530 or so...
4.56 gears + install kit+ bearings is like $300 from Randy's R/P,
Plan on new brakes if it a yard axle, rotors are about $25 a pop calipers more like $45 with core
The adaapter for the ds is like $18.
I found them for $350-900 around here East coast, buddy got one for $300
There are some for sale on the JU board.. both with 4.56 one locked one open...

The only problem with the drums is that:
one - they're drums instead of discs... not a big deal, but discs are sure nice.
two - the discs will hold your wheel on if you break an axleshaft. The 8.8 is a C-clip axle afterall...

If you want a good locker for a good price, a lockrite would be a good choice, but i've heard stories about them grenading, not all, but some, but i don't know what type of terrain it was on or anything. A spool is another option if you don't mind road manners too much, and the detroit is great, but much more expensive, i'd say lockrite, for a happy medium.

The Pre 95 ones are drums, only 28 spline, not much stronger than a 35c. Best bet is 95+ 31 spline and disk.
There was a 31 spline version with drums, not sure what years.

if I was you id hold off and find a 95' and newer Exploder one. The disc brakes are nice to have! I love-um. and all the disc brake versions have 31 splines for sure, some even have 4.10's. Good luck :D

All Explorer 8.8's are big bearing, 31 spline. Rangers have small bearing, 28 spline. '95 and up X 8.8's are disc.

Ok guys here it goes. This could be solved with a search as this info has been out there before but with the goot title to this topic for the search engin I will say it.
ALL explorer 8.8 are 31 spline. Prove me wrong and I will retract it. To prove me wrong you must have a 28 spline explorer rear in hand. I have looked at probably 30 to 40 of them easy from every year and they were all 31.
Buy the drum version and then go get a backing plate from a junk yard and slap on new brakes. You might be able to do this cheaper.
