I just put a locker in the front axle of my YJ to go with the locked rear. Along with increased traction comes very tight steering and difficulty turning. I have seen a cable device that replaces the vacuum and lets you unlock manually for tight turns. I like the idea but they want $200. Has anyone come up with something homemade to do the same? I was thinking maybe routing the vacuum so that you can valve it on or off from the cab, or maybe a homemade cable setup. I'm not ready to replace the axle so please don't suggest that. Any ideas?

Yeah, I seem to remember some guy making his own with a bicycle shifter/cable assembly or something like that...
Do a search.

Its probably not a good idea to put a locker other than an ARB or OX in the front of your YJ. The design of the YJ dana 30 is such that the driver side shaft and side gears are always turning. When you are in 2WD a lock-right or ez locker will constantly slip and click because of no resistance on the pass side. Eventually you will wear out the locker. If you put it 4WD the locker will behave but you wont be able to turn with power applied. You can run one of these lockers in a TJ 30 because both axles always turn in 2WD (no disconnect). Hope this helps.

Hey newbie.. he didnt ask on your opinion on putting a locker in the front or not.. he was asking about the disconnect...:flipoff::flipoff:
if you dont have something to reply on that is helpful about it.. dont reply
Now.. some people use a bolt to run thru the shifter fork.. then you put it by a cable to activate the shift fork and engage the colar... how to do it is beyond me..

It isn't too hard. Just go get yourself a lockable cable from Napa and take the vacuum unit apart. Drill a hole in the side closest to the driver, run the cable with the housing in, drill the fork, connect the cable, insert a spring, and you are done. The only tricky part is finding the spring that will work well to return the fork, and not be too hard to pull. Do a search for Welded D30 and you should come across a thread where me and some other folks were talking about it. Just take it apart and everything will make sense. If you still need some help, PM me and I can get you some step by step pictures.

I am so dissappointed in you....:flipoff2:
So now that you can manually control the disconnect, are you going to be welding it?
