Maybe I missed it, but did you end up notching the frame for shackle travel up front? If so, do you have pics? The project is really looking good. Can't wait to see wheeling pics.

Not sure if you have enough room behind the dash for it but a Pelican case makes a wonderful waterproof box for the ECU.

Sweet buildup, by the way! Makes me yearn for one as my daily commuter.

It's so close to call, we just don't know yet. Right now when we flex the truck, the shackles are not hitting the frame, but it's so close you can hardly get a credit card between the frame and the leaf spring. We are going to wait until after it's first run to see if we can gain any travel by doing the notching to the frame. At this point the frame is unnotched and the bumpstops are limiting the travel.

Yes we could, but I was not planning to have the Power Tank on board during competition. We will use the compressor as the primary air for the front locker. The Power Tank will be used for adjusting/filling tires and power tools on the trail.

Well we can't get the truck running. We are having some major problems with LC Engineering and the EFI computer. According to LC unless you go with the full $1400 system with the coils you have to run the stock computer and/or use an after market system like MSD. So now we are packing it up the computer kit and overnighting it to canada (at our cost) so we can get it exchanged for the full kit. The info we received from the sale guy was BS. Just a warning. If you don't use the full $1400 kit be prepared to keep the original computer and try to find some way to get it to work with the new computer.

We thought we would be able to start the truck today but now we have to start over from scratch on the computer and harness.

If we don't get the right computer back in a couple of days we are going to ditch the LC setup and just use a stock computer and harness.

you'll need to use a vacum advance distrubutor off of a carb truck, along with a coil and ignitor off of the same truck. that should be all you need.

the cheaper SDS kit is a fuel only system. the stock EFI ECU controls both fuel AND spark. the more expensive SDS uses individual coil packs and a crank trigger for spark. You do gain some HP from the individual coil packs and a crank trigger, but its hard to say if its worth the extra $400 or whatever it is.

a dizzy, coil and ignitor off of a carb truck will take care of the spark, and the SDS kit will take care of the fuel.

or. you could try to integrate it with the stock ECU to control spark, but that is pointless, it'd just be a mess of wires again.

If you guys want to go with the stock system, let me know, I can set you up with a striped down harness, like i did for Re:Todd and Aaron's rig.

The new computer and coil assembly came in and Mike spent a few hours plugging it in. The used starter we found in the back yard did not work. After replacing the starter with starter that Marlin rebuit the motor fired up at 10 PM tuesday night.

By the way thanks for the offer to build a striped harness. I am glad someone is offering to build these. I did this on my last buggy and spent many many hours gettin that harness right.

Yes we did end up with a seat sliders on the driver side. We have a lot of sifferent drivers. Rocky is short at about 5' 6", and Marlin is 6' 6". This slider will let of move the seat forward and back like a regular car seat.

Next years rules are going to require a 3" gap between the driver helmet and the lowest bar. We will have no problem with that.

Not sure. Depends on what all you want, i.e., Hydro assist or no Hydro? 30 splines? new, or used parts? EFI or Carbed? Bling or no Bling? Fresh or as is engine & tranny? etc. The sky is the limit  :D
If I was to do another one, It'd have a fresh motor & tranny and have all the Bling and could go for 20K or more. However it'd be cleaner and better than the first one I built.

I've been tempted to do one or two but not till after I build my new shop/addition this summer. Kinda funny, today a guy just sold me a running 85 that he had just rolled last week. Fell asleep at the wheel. It has some road rash and a busted windshield. Other than that, it only looks like some newbie took it up Wrecking Ball  So now I have another running donner rig for a turn key FT ;) Potentially next winter's project :D

For sheet metal work we went to a long time industry pro Ed Datin. Ed, the owner of Datin Fabrication in Hemet CA, has put aluminum skins on literally hundreds of race trucks over the years and has all the tools to make them fast and easy. It took Ed and I two full days to make and mount 24 panels.

http://www.marlincrawler.com/ftoy/270.jpg

Starting with construction paper, Ed cuts out patterns for each panel.

Chris Geiger
04-17-2005, 03:07 PM
Each paper pattern is layed out on large 8' X 12' sheets of .050" thick aluminum. The patterns are traced and cut from the sheets.

Dzus fasteners are used in the corners of most of the panels to allow for easy removal and installation. Dzus fasteners allow for fast/easy removal of panels when needed.

Are you guys going to flare/bell the holes? It makes for a much stiffer panel and reduces vibration/rattle. It's worth making the simple tool on a lathe!

Andy built the exhaust system and has mounted it up as high as possible. Heat wrap is used under the floor near the drivers feet to keep the heat under control. The muffler is mounted above the rear diff to try to protect it. The muffler is free flowing as few bends as possible. The muffler keeps the rig as quite as a stock truck.

In order to allow the truck to run cooler Angelo and I ripped out the undersized radiator and replaced it with a larger one we had at the shop. This will larger radiator will serve temporary duty until a custom aluminum radiator is built.

Before it was loaded up I took a spin in it and did a front burn. It worked flawlessly. To get more rear breaking our of the drums, larger 1" rear cylinders were used from a 1991 FJ80 land cruiser. These larger wheel cycinders allow each rear wheel to be easily locked up.

Marlin took off for Moab last night at 10:00 pm and should arrive this afternoon. Marlin is taking his camera and will be getting photos!

There has been much debate at the shop as to what lockers to run in the buggy. Some here want Detroit's front and rear because they don't require turning on and off. Others want the ARB's for better turning ability. Currently we have a compromise with an ARB in the front and a Detroit in the rear. A rear ARB won't help much with the steering, but in front it will allow the truck to turn tighter. To operate the front locker we wanted a easy to reach/operate switch. In big trucks, 2 speed rear diffs are a common. It just so happens that Angelo use to work a big rig repair depot. So when I asked Angelo if he could get one of those shifter mounted switches, he knew exactly were to get it. Within minutes, Angelo returned with the switch and a short harness to connect it to our harness. The 2 speed switch is made by Eaton, part #032861. The Harness is made by Cole Hersee and is part #40102. Here is a photo of the switch.

In this position the switch is very easy to operate. Up for on and down for off.

Hey Chris, When I was there today i noticed a different radiator in the F-toy than the Sammy unit you had. What is it from and does it keep it cool enough?

The Sammy unit was just not big enough to the job. After looking through every radiator the book, I decided that a custom shape was the only way to go. I found the 4L Jeep radiator was the right height but too wide. I took it down and had about 9" of width removed from it. Even after being cut, it was still a lot larger Samurai core we had tried. No there is no overheating problem at all.

chris wants to grow, develop and create a huge toyota 4wd business and marlin is comfy with the smaller ''family'' run deal hes got. chris' efforts brought marlins company from nearly folding to, IMO, the best toy aftermarket company on the planet(for rockcrawlers).

hopefully, chris' new venture wont squeeze marlin back into the position he was previously before...
i may be wrong, but, booger, didn't marlin sell and become a corp.? seems to me that chris wants to single handedly trying to turn the small toyota rock crawling company's (one small company at a time) into the great company's that marlin became. :flipoff2:

but i am drunk so i prolly don't know what i am talking about.

Does Marlin have a representative on this board anymore? How are we gonna get updates on this kickass f-toy?

Both the thread here about Chris no longer working for MC and the thread on Marlin's board about selling the business, then not selling it, then Chris telling Marlin he was going to do photography and turning up at trail Gear mysteriously disappeared. :rolleyes

The propane kit works extremely well and yes I purchased it from Got Propane. The kit installed in just a few hours. I will never go back to EFI or Carb. Give Carey a call at Got Propane, he will take good care of you.

"Trail-Gear is the originator of forged high steer arms for Toyota Pickups and 4Runners." How's that? Marlin Crawler was selling these arms before TG even existed.

The ARB compressor on the buggy was submerged under water at the Round up. So, we’re taking the ARB out of the front and installing a HP Detroit. The rear end has a Detroit but we are going to install a spool. We also have to change one of the knuckles out. The buggy was ran hard and put away wet:flipoff2:

I think that people inquiring about trail gear need to take it out of this post. I think it is pretty crappy for business owners from another company, specially a new company to come into a tread and hyjack it by posting pics of there formula toy and promoting their company. This is a buildup thread nothing more.

Hope you are happy with out the ARB up front. The spool out back on the F-toy is probly a good idea, but I think I'd still keep the ARB up front even if it did mean replacement parts. Still a great looking rig!

Yeah, lots of plans for the f-toy this year, the guys at Marlins are really excited about getting her out, running trails and attending as many events as they can, a couple of people wanting to drive in different events, it should be fun.

Thats why I have a hose running from my CO2 tank to the were the compressor is mounted. If the compressor takes a shit I can just hookup the lines and run the ARB off the CO2 tank :smokin: The line is not hooked to the CO2 tank all the time , only if the compressor fails , and that hasn't happened yet...........................................knoc k on wood.

Marlin, CJ and Tim took the buggy out to Congress, AZ this weekend of Put up or Shut up. We placed 18th. of 21 spots. CJ was driver and Tim was the spotter. They picked up 260 points. Not to bad for running a leaf spring Toyota frame against custom tub buggies with air shocks. There were only two Formula Toy rigs in the competition. The other F-Toy added 61 more points putting them at 20th. Place.

Good Job CJ and Tim!

Props to the marlin crew! You guy's did a great job with your F-toy build and the event. I really liked getting a chance to see your rig in person. Especially after following the build. You guy's have me all spun up. I think I'm going to tear down my trail rig and make an F-toy. I already have all the parts, just need the chassis.

Rear Leaf Springs Mounts

Next measured 6.5" up and forward of the factory bolts and marked the frame. Then I placed the tubing on the frame and centered the hangers front to back and left to right. Next I tacked the tubing to the frame and rechecked the position of the hangers.

I am getting started on my frame soon and was wondering why you went forward with the spring mount. Do I need to go forward with it or can I go just up and in from the stock mount?

MT4Runner
09-12-2007, 08:17 AM
I'm guessing they used rear leaves that were longer than stock. For example, for a stock rear axle location, a 3rd gen has leaves that are 3-4" longer than 1st-2nd gen rears. The 3rd gen shackle hanger sits 2" farther back, and the frameside spring hanger has a hole about 1" farther forward than the 1st-2nd gens.

People have used 54-56-57" springs; you need to place your hangers and shackle hangers according to where you want your spring center pin over your axle.

Have all your parts ready and then start measuring, cutting, and welding.

On this project we have and will do some different and creative things but I think this one is the most controversial of them all. The rules state that the radiator must be in front of the motor. The rules do not say how large the radiator needs to be. We don't want the top of the radiator above the front cage tube going around the engine. We also don't want it go below the frame or we will have interference with the pitman arm. Mounting our steering box inside the frame rail further reduces the space we have available for the radiator. We had originally planned to have a custom radiator made to fit the tight space but looking through a Modine catalog we found a good fit. This is a 3 row upgrade from a factory 2 core radiator for a Suzuki Samurai. Sitting next to the stock Toyota radiator on the right, it looks more like a heater core! Dean placed a call to a good friend that works at a radiator shop and he explained what we were planning to do. He gave us an interesting formula. He said that a typical 3 row radiator will cool an engine equivalent to the surface area of the core. This radiator has a surface area of 13" X 13" or 169 square inches. Using this formula, this radiator will provide cooling for up a maximum engine size of 169 cubic inches (normally aspirated). Our stock 22re is 147 cubic inches. If we were planning to hook a trailer up to this truck and drive it full throttle up the grapevine on a hot day, I think we would see some serious overheating. However in this application we have a well ventilated engine bay and won't be using full throttle for more than a few minutes at a time so I believe with the help of a 12+" electric fan we will have sufficient cooling. This new 3 row unit cost just $109. We also like that it has an auto tranny cooler on the bottom that we can use to cool our power steering system with.
