Yup, she was free, and turd brown, complete with turd wrinkles in the paint :D! She's a '78 quadratrac Waggoner, with the low range option, AMC 360.
I slapped some 31" MT's I had on her and took her muddin'. She did a helluva lot better than I thought she would.
The only issue that concerns me now is the bangin' that she emits occasionally in low gear, under load. Never in high. I read about gears loosing teeth and the chain slipping, but I can't figure why it only makes the noise in low gear.
Would the excess torque make the chain slip, or do I just have some teeth missing on the low gear, or what?
If it's just the chain, I'll replace it, if it's the gears, I'm not really sure what I'll do since they aren't really possible to get anymore. Any input?

I am not sure what is causing the problem but I have a waggy complete the same year with the same t-case so if you wind up needing parts let me know. I still drive it around but I am about to start tearing it apart to build a flatfender.

More than likely it's the streched chain making the noise....the gears usually do't let go.
If you replace the chain and learn when to, or not to engage the emergency 4wd system you'll be good to go for years of wheeling.
I built 1 good case out of 3 bad ones and it held for 3 years...after blowing 2 trannies, 2 motors, both 1 rear, and front ends, tires ranging from 35s to 38.5s boggers and swampers. The only :shaking: reason I retired that rig was cause of a cracked frame, body and blown motor. The tcase was still good to go.

You might also check the motor and trans mount. My trans mount was rotted, and allowed the t-case to bounce on my 75 Wag.

Its more then likely the chain, replace it soon or you may take a trip to the local 7-11 and end up with half the T-case laying under your jeep.
Congrats on the waggie! their is a boat load of cool stuff you can do to that thing and even grill swaps. Body parts were almost identical for all models for almost 30 years and with sites like ifsja.org and fsjworld.com you can check out what others have done to make their waggies trail worthy. Heck their is even a FSJ magazine!!

i would guess its the chain! open the small plug in the bottom of the case, run small screwd river in till you hit the chain, then push to see how much play it has...more than 3/4 to and inch replace chain!!! oh btw dont get one made from china(read:crapola) make sure to get a morse chain! they can be had from $120-$140..
www.ifsja.org is a good place to start ;)
