: Tranny Swap?
WBDISCO 11-13-2004, 09:57 AM Ok, i either broke a mainshaft or a countershaft in my R380 this week :mad3: I haven't pulled it out yet due to lack of time, but i am wondering if there is any other Manual Tranny that I could put in that wouldn't take a whole lot of work to do. I would idealy like to put something in that has a lower first gear. I remember people talking about this, but i believe it was for an auto tranny. Simple adapters aren't a problem but i don't want to have to do anything drastic.

madcowdungbeetle 11-13-2004, 10:13 AM Supposedly high-impact.net had a NV4500 kit for Land Rovers at onepoint. I don't know if they ever did or if it was just heresay.

nothing murrican, at least with your ^^^^ restrictions. LT95's are floating around out there, and sport a good 1st gear of 4.07:1 Rebuild parts are getting hard to find, or so I hear. And then, of course, the caveats with it's temperamental center diff apply.
Bush65 11-13-2004, 02:55 PM The early R380's (suffix 'J') had a weakness (hole) in the mainshaft where they break. They also broke layshafts.
This was fixed in later (suffix 'L') boxes. These also have wider (stronger) gears and some bearings are larger.
portalrover 11-13-2004, 03:20 PM The NV4500 conversion has been done to Lt230's here in Aus. Check with Marks 4wd adaptors or Advance adaptors for spudshaft and adaptor plate.
I have also fitted a NP 435 (4spd with 6.69 low) to the LT230 using a modified Marks Turbo 400 spudshaft and adaptor housing.

evilfij 11-13-2004, 04:05 PM I have a disco R380 if you decide not to convert.

texascadillac42 11-13-2004, 06:28 PM What do you want for the R380? Is it the early or late model type?
WBDISCO 11-13-2004, 06:34 PM Definitely interested in the NV4500 route. I will see if i can find one and then i can figure what it entails.

with a rover engine?
portalrover 11-14-2004, 12:37 AM The 2 NV4500 conversions in Aus I know about were to v8 Chev deisels and LT230 but there are no reasons you couldn't fit it to a rover engine, after all I have fitted NP435 and Warner T98's to 4, 6 and v8 Rover engines and series T/cases.

Cherub Rock 11-14-2004, 05:27 PM you can do the NV4500/lt230, but not with the Rover v8 to my knowledge..
even with a 350 or something, moving the crossmembers and finding a new housing (with the big tranny hole) would entail a whole lotta work..
do the nv4500 and lt230 mating flanges even hookup correctly?
(new guy here, too. hi.. i'll keep quiet and try not to piss anyone off..)
portalrover 11-15-2004, 03:23 AM Very few transmissions match together without adaptors Cherub Rock for the NV4500 to LT230 you will need a spudshaft to join the gearbox mainshaft to the transfercase input gear and an adaptor plate (Marks 4wd adaptors Aust definately, Advance adaptors US maybe). To adapt the NV4500 to the Rover V8 you could make a flat plate adaptor and use the R380 bellhousing and either shorten or lengthen the NV4500 input shaft to suit.

Cherub Rock 11-15-2004, 12:50 PM oh nice, I guess I didn't realize the r380 housing worked. for some reason i thought you had to use a housing off an older model truck, due to the size..
I assume WB is doing this in his Disco (judging by his avatar).. would you have to fab a new mount? and move the crossmembers further back? I just remember helping my buddy take out his nv4500 to work on it, and the thing was way huge... seems like you'd have trouble fitting it into a disco.
sorry if i'm being redundant, this is mostly for my own edification. i've just recently been converted to the Green Oval myself (cute little stocker Disco1... gonna defile her my sawzall just as soon as possible and throw in an old Detroit i have lying around and some beater 32s retreads. I wanna see how badly i can beat her up for cheap..) and still trying to get a feeling for what i'm dealing with here.
i was checking out "discoweb.org" -- what a joke. i guess it's a good place to go if my sunroofs won't open
anyway glad i found you all. see ya around
