O.K. My 84 toy 22r is do for smog. I did the search and found all the tricks to pass smog like the gas additives and timing, tune-up, but my questions are.
1. Is the treadmill (rollers) mandatory for smog test stations. I've noticed a few shops that say smog test only and they are doing stationary test ( no rollers in sight).
2. If not then whats easier to pass smog with the rollers or the stationary.
3. I have a tiny exhaust leak at the manifold to the head. ( bolts are tight, bad gasket). Will this leak really throw it off bad.
Thanks,
Eric

they do not put a load on the engine, it is a static test.
I don't think you can pass with any kind of exhaust leak.
i would tend to think the static test would be easier to pass
The rollers are what is called as a DYNO test. You only need to have a DYNO test if the DMV says you have to have it (check your renewal notice). Otherwise, take it to a normal smog station.
Any good smog tech will note that you have an exhaust leak and they will try to plug the leak with something for the test.
See if Toy Tech (Jim Brink) is lurking around since he is very familiar with CA smog stuff.

The only time an exhaust leak becomes a problem is if the probe cannot get enough exhaust gasses, then it stops the test due to exhaust dilution.:flipoff2: It is easier to pass a dyno test than an idle test. During a dyno test the cat gets warmer, therfore working better.:smokin:

Every smog check in the enhanced areas of cali are done on the rollers. The only way your not on the rollers is if you have AWD.
Enhanced Areas: These areas do not meet federal or state air quality standards for ozone and carbon monoxide and are California's smoggiest urbanized areas. Biennial Smog Checks are required here. Fifteen percent (15%) of the vehicles in these areas must have their biennial Smog Checks performed at Test-Only stations.
I live in an enhanced area because all the smog from the Bay area blows east and is caught by the Sierra!
Here is a Zip code look up to see if your in an enhanced area:

Right now its 18% and they want to go to 20%.

Umm, not quite! :D One of the main reasons for the loaded mode is to test EGR operation. If the EGR system isn't working or the CAT isn't capable of cleaning up the NOx, you'll fail that portion of the test for sure.

How does that work with a 91 and newer 4.0 wrangler? Its a non EGR system. Unless I am wrong.:)
