I have a 78 GMC one ton with a H400. Is there any reason why I can not swap in a SM456?

I figure I can just go to the junk yard and get the peddles, linkage, and trany hump. Have the drive line extended.

Any reason why this wont work??

Thanks,

I have done this-pretty easy to swap. I had a Turbo 350/205 that I swapped out for a SM465/205 and I was able to use the same x-member and driveshafts. Pretty straight forward with your swap......I did mine in a Toyota for a few weeks while my trans. was getting built......Yes.....Daily Driver:D  :p

Yea this is an easy swap, just make sure you get all the parts your gonna need from the donor truck. Your gonna need the bell housing, flywheel, clutch assy, tranny, mounting bolts, adapter, splined gear in adapter, xfer case, speedo reduction unit, pedals, rod that connects pedal to linkage, boot for rod (inner and outer), clutch fork, clutch linkage (make sure your block has a provision for the clutch linkage pivot ball).
You dont really need the center hump cause you can cut the holes in the on you have. Make sure you also get the shifters and linkages for the Xfer case and tranny. And the shifter boots.
Might want to grab the harness for the back up light switch and nuetral safety switch that plug into the tranny. I think thats it, did I miss anything?:D :skull:

Nuetral safety switch on the column is for automatic tranny. SM465 has on on the top hat of the tranny.:D :skull:

The Clutch pivot ball mounts on the aluminum bell housing. If you are using the older cast iron bell housing you might have to fab up a bracket because the opposite side pivot mounts on the frame next to the bellhousing, not the engine. Also if you use a cast iron bell housing, you will need a new starter. One that mounts to the bell housing, not the engine block.
Overall it is not a hard swap.:p

I enjoyed it so much the first time, I am doing it again.:D
