View Full Version : Rear Tire Carrier, or "how strong are my door hinges?"

Okay, my Defender has the spare mounted on the rear door. I've reinforced the door where the welds broke and the bracing was not sufficient, so it now holds together pretty well.

I am considering moving the spare tire out behind the door maybe 6-8 inches by building some sort of tubing / box contraption (giving me a place to store a jerry can).

So, will my hinges hold or will my door fall off on some particularly jarring section of trail?

[The purpose behind doing this is to provide clearance for a rear bumper winch, mounted to the top of the NAS bumper.]

Your door will fall off. Have a look at what the hinges are connected to.

yup, hinges are weak and will fail with large (even regular) spares.

Get a real wheel carrier if you have to have the wheel on the outside. Do not extend the carrier or attach jerry cans. A D110 does not like extra weight that far back. Try to mount the winch inside and forward for weight distribution.

I try to keep my 110 light in the rear, it helps on both hiway and trails.

After reading this thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=302487) I'm glad my spare is kept inside the truck.

Hi all, been lurking for a while now, the door hinges and even the door are not up to the task supporting any heavy weights. Go with a custom carrier to support all your gear at the rear, i built my own as aftermarket ones did not seem up to the task. I have a pic but no red star so here is the link to the pic.

I think the hinges will be fine, it will just rip the skin off the door. :flipoff2:
