Hobart or Miller that is...

Do you find that the reccomended wire speed on the welder is a bit too high? Its telling me 85 for 3/16 steel with .030 wire, and that just seems like a little much. I did some destructive tests and the welds are strong, but the bead is rather large. I speed it up a little bit, and I don't get decent penetration. Any tips?

Thats why your machine tells you that those are "recomended starting points" you may need to increase the heat or decrease the wire speed. First rule is practice on metal that is the same size and type you will be welding(ie if you are welding 3/8 steel then practice on 3/8 steel if you are welding on 1/2 inch aluminum then practice on 1/2 inch aluminum).

Its just a guide for a starting pint. If it says you should set it at 35 and it runs best for you at 50, there is nothing wrong with that. I have never used any type of welder that worked best for me anywhere near the suggested settings.

That is what I figured, just thought that I would check and see what everyone else thought. Thanks for the tips.

I was wondering if I could use my 220V outlet even though it is a 230V welder. I know this is a stupid question but i'm a newbie.

Its just a starting point. On my Miller 210, I actually run the wire speed a little slower and get deeper penetration easier than running the wire speed fast. I don't have to move the gun as fast across the material that way, I move slower to get the penetration.

FWIW ... i have a hobart 175 and run the wire speed in between 10 and 20 with the juice on 4 ... works pretty good for me ... i actually wish it would go even slower than that for welding thin stuff ... or maybe i'm just slow :)

It will work fine. 220V, 230V, and 240V are all basically the same rating. Similar to 110V, 115V, and 120V ratings.

They are all the same basic rating, but the true voltage may vary due to your location, etc.
