I started shopping for a camshaft last night. While there isn't a big range of stock camshafts-and Pendy's insistence the 4.2 cams are the same as the 3.9s, I did find a few variations and little data.

The Rave CD lists a total lift of 0.365 (IIRC). I'm assuming the rocker arms are 1.5:1 and the camshaft lifter is actually about 0.245.

Now, I see cams listed for 3.5, 3.9, 4.2 and then, I saw one listed for low compression engines and another for US spec. Now, from the Rave, it appears as though the low compression engine might be the US 4.2.

Yes, I'm obsessing, but not as bad as other's secret obsessions. Maybe tomorrow, I'll measure the other two cams, or rather, take the time to write down the measurements.

As the measurements increase (n-1), the confusion increases as well.

The first year of the 4.2 ('93), had the hottest cam. Too lumpy at idle and a lot of warrantee cams were replaced. Late '93's and on had a more gentle cam and got rid of the warrantee claims. If you can find specs for a '93 4.2 cam that's the hottest LR stock cam I have heard of.

This is all knowledge I've gleaned from two seperate LR techs in Portland and one here in SLC.

I can attest to the fact that my early '93 4.2 runs like a raped ape. I can't wait to put an NRP or Borla on it and some sort of open element air filter. Hmmm maybe I'll punch out the cats too...
