I have a friend who had a wrangler and the front wheel drive does not work I was wondering what the vacuum stuff is all about and how to test it. When I shifted the lever into 4 low it was in low but only 2 low and the light did not come on is there something else that I should be looking at besides the vacuum system? Any help would be great I am lost when it comes to Jeeps.
TIA

Vacuum lines could possibly be disconnected from the axle. They are located on the passengers side of the front axle, mounted on the back side. Make sure the fitting that all the lines converge into is firmly seated on the axle. They can get oil soaked and this connector comes off easily after they stretch. Some plastic tie wraps take care of the problem for a little while!!!:)

Also check the other end where they all connect. I have seen that piece get broke when doing any clutch or tranny work. It is in a bad place. Hope this helps.

The lines are plastic, so they can crack from the cold, or even get eaten by a bad battery (read corrosion)... I've seen it happen. There are several threads about the YJ vacuum problems... The best bet (short of getting a real axle) seems to be building some kind of manual connection instead of the vacuum.

I did check both ends of the conection and they were in good shape, fit nice and were clean. I guess I could take my vacume gague and check the lines for crackes. Does anyone make a alternitive to the vacume system? I like the idea of a real axlel but this is about 99% road driven and .5% gravel and .5% offroad so it is impractical to change the axel out at this point but I am hopeing to get him to wheel more when I get the 4wd fixed then ......................:D

That covered how to change to a cable system not what could be wrong. Nothing worse than a newbie sucking up to the high noses.

No I do not feel stupid I am sorry Jeep decided to name everything two times and I did not know that a wrangler and a yj are the same thing. I did search and found some great information on the VACUME system and how to trouble shoot it that will come in handy Saturday when I fix it.
