the wiring is shot in the old TLC. Has anyone done this and is it as hard as I think its going to be? I would like some Ideas how to do this.

I'm starting to rewire mine as well, since the PO to the PO did a really fawked up job...My lisence plate lights are run with bad speaker wire...

Anyways, I think you may have to keep the turn signal blinker box, wherever it is (haven't found it quite yet). Other than that, the wiring is pretty simple. My headlights turn on separately from the dash/tail lights, via a 3 way toggle switch on the dash. Up is high, middle is off, and down is low. Pretty simple to wire up.

I think that the biggest 2 problems you might run into are
A) Going through the firewall
B) Getting into the guts behind the dash.

Now, I know from experience that getting through the firewall is no biggie, just follow the current wires. But (also from experience) MAKE SURE you disconnect the battery before you pull of the guage cluster. I tried to change a light in there once, and ended up blowing several fuses in a shower of sparks...and NOTHING was on at the time.

Also, I think it would be a very good idea to replace the fuse panel (what a joke that is) with a marine model. They're pretty cheap, quite corrosion-resistant, and some are even waterproof. And I've been redoing all of the wires with shrink-tube over all the connections I don't expect to be disconnecting much. Oh, and it's never a bad idea to go up a size or two in wires...less chance of it frying if you happen to add, say, an extra winch to the circuit :D

Anyways, that said, so far it's been pretty easy. Just be sure to get rid of the duct tape/wires/extra (working) turn signal bundles under the hood (oh, wait, that's MY rig :flipoff2: )

Just be glad you're not rewiring anything late model! :flipoff2:

And remember, if all else fails, it'll run w/ no electricity over to someone else's place if it all goes down the crapper. (nooo...I've never run w/out the alternator or battery attached, why do you ask? :flipoff2: )

On my 76, it's in a fawked-up location. Look under the dash, on the far driver's side. As I recall it's on the side of the body. You'll give yourself a sore neck just trying to look at the thing. I'm just glad mine still works. :flipoff2:

Another 40 owner discovers the ammeter... :D

Or desmogging a 76 Kalifornia model. Not that I'd ever do something like that. :flipoff2:

I like the marine fuse panel idea! Might just hafta look into one of those puppies before too long.

You could always just scrap all the wiring and use one of the Painless wiring kits. Unless you have a 55 like mine that needs special circuits like the electric rear window, it should all be in the kit.

Another good thing about the marine panels: A lot of them are available with either fuses or circuit breakers :)

Thanks for the info on where the box is...I think it's about exactly where my clutch pedal squeak is :flipoff2:
