I found a used winch, a warn MX10000, and was wondering if anyone here knows the specs for one? Was it a worm drive winch or planetary gears? Were they any good or should I hold out for a HS9500i?

More commonly known as a m10000? Not a bad winch but very slow. Go with a 8274. The run fast and are very reliable.

It may be slow but it does work very well. I know someone who was stuck in their YJ (in the snow) and pulled themself and 2 other stuck vehicles out at the same time. It's a little too big for my taste though.

So you think it would be to big for my toy pickup? I was thinking about building a receiver mount system to use on my toy and on my full size extra cab chevy. I'd need a big winch for the chevy, but don't want to weigh down my toy too much.

i agree get and 8274 they are a little big but very strong and reliable ive got one on my 76 chevy it pulled me and a cheroke up a hill through mud and the jeep did not run:)

what was the model number for the good worm drive warn 10000.
could that be the mx?

Just what does the X in MX mean? I've got a MX8000, it says MX right on the plate, but everybody including Warn (on service calls and emails) calls it a M8000.

TRUST ME, I have lugged ALL of those Warn winches around for the past 3 years. (all of the product catalog and web shots are mine)

I know them all too intimately, and I would suggest that for a multi-mount style winch, to NOT use the M10 or M12. Even the 8274 might be kind of a funky thing to have on a multimount unless the cradle is EXTREMELY bulky and reinforced.

If you're just putting it on a small-ish Toyota, you ought to look for an 8000 or 9000 model. The 9500 is a bit heavier, but you probably don't *really* need (or want) the speed and expense.

The M10 is a sweet winch, I have one on my 1990 Range Rover, I just wouldn't want to have it on a cradle heaving it all over the place.

A suggestion for the multi-mount when it's NOT being used. Make a dummy reciever hitch with a 6x6 plate (or so) bolted through the floor so the winch has a secure place to live. Either mount the winch horizontally or vertically depending on which will fit better.
