Always wanted to throw a 79' luv on a toy frame / running gear..

Had one in High School. Wheeled the shiat out of it. Ran a set of 33's, w/ stock gears, air shocks in the rear, T-bars maxed out, Double single Roll bar, 4 KC's, CB, and a 10' whip... It was pimpin... Traded it for a 87 camaro w/ T-tops... Can you say Joe dirt..

What engine swaps are popular/easiest for these trucks? My neighbor has one with a tired 1.8 izuzu in it, and is thinking about a swap.

Mounts and supplies are readily available from several manufacturers to put SBC's into a Luv. Other than that, you can put anything that will fit in the engine compartment. You'll have to fab your mounts and adapt the engines wiring, cooling, and other systems to the truck. It all depends how involved you want to get. I've seen several people put BBC's into a Luv

I was thinking more along the lines of a 4.3 v6. I think i've seen motor mount kits from Hooker for the sbc and v6. We were kicking the 4.3 idea around, and questioned a solution for the tranny and t-case. He'd like to keep the stock running gear if possible.

I wouldn't do that. You're going to be adding more than double the stock HP with a 4.3 and the stock axles aren't going to like that too much :D

What are some alternatives to the SBC then?? I've done a good amount of searching, and only come up with the SBC swaps. I did find a buick v6 swap, but it was in a 2wd. Would he be better off rebuilding the izuzu engine and converting it to electronic ignition? What about the guys in the toyota section, they swap 4.3's in all the time with the stock running gear?? Is the toyota that much stronger than the Luv?

Toyota axles would be a good choice. They are very strong for their size. Read about it in the Toyota FAQ and you'll see what I mean.

What is the reason for wanting a V6 instead of a SBC? You can also check out Luvtruck.com . Theres alot of guys there that have done various motor swaps and can give you some good advice. :D

I have pretty good luck with the Toy running gear with a 408" mouse & Q78 TSL's (competition mud bogger). Buddy has part of an old Luv & I did some frame measurements & it looks like the Toy frame would work very very well.

Thanks for the info Tex :D . About how far off are the cab mounts would you say? I was thinking that if the offset was small enough that it would be pretty easy to make an adapter/mount that would bolt to the stock cab mount one one end and to the stock Toy frame mount on the other if they were close enough and maybe incorporate a small amount of body lift into the mount. Luvs have tiny little fenderwells and I wouldn't want to cut 'em out :D

I'm not sure about the actual cab-mount locations. But, if I remember correctly (it's been a couple years since we measured), the frame is almost the exact width from the cowl on back. The main difference was the section forward of the cab where the IFS mounts vs. the solid axle of the Toy. And honestly, even that part wasn't THAT far off.

you're right tex. when i put the yota axles under my 79 i had an 80 yota frame side by side with the luv and they are almost identical. it was less work to keep the luv frame and swap the axles.
