: Rear brakes quit working on my xj

The drums on my 95xj are not stopping at all. Even driving hard they are ice cold and the front brakes are practically melting. The sheos are newer and adjusted properly, only thing that has changed is that I flushed the brake lines recently and I also caught about a 1foot of air by accident. No leaks, no bubbles when bleeding, and the rear bleeds good, plenty of fluid in master the entire time. What did I do wrong?

My guess would be that the proportioning valve tripped. I've had this problem god knows how many times with s-10's. It's a real pain in the ass to trip the valve back. Tapping it with a wrench, small hammer. Hitting hte brake pedal nice and hard many times or bleading the master and then the porportioning valve.
Is your brake light on in the dash? I know that on my s-10's the light would always come on when the valve tripped and went out when I tripped the valve back.
You said that the rear bleeds good...Is this still the case now after you noticed the problem (Have you tried to bleed the rear brakes again since). Also when you bleed the rear brakes (at the wheel cylinders), is the fluid coming out with force (spraying at least 1 foot) or is it just dripping out?

I have not bled the brakes since this started. When i did bleed them the fluid was not sqirting far but I had 1/4 vaccuum line hooked up to the bleeder draining into my used oil bucket. I was pushing pedal slowly also so it would not squirt past the bucket. No brake light on the dash. I will go bleed again and tap prop valve with hammer to see if that helps. Thanks.

Yeah I think I tripped the prop valve because nothing bleeds out the back at all anymore. I tried bleeding the prop valve and tapping with a hammer but nothing has helped. Any ideas?

With my presonal experence it's gonna take some time to get the valve to trip back (again if that is the case..but it really sounds like the problems that I was having). I've had some instances where it's taken me close to 1 hour just to get the valve to trip back. Somethings that I have done is to loosen the line at the proportioning valve and hit the brake pedal nice and hard with your foot a few times or having someone tapp the prop valve (again with either wrench or small hammer) while someone else keeps hitting the pedal. Like I said above with my s10 I would just do this until the brake light went out on the dash (thus telling me that hte valve had tripped back). Fisrt for you I'd try bleeding hte proportioning valve and getting fluid flowing there and then try the back again. You will know when the fuildi s flowing to the rear brakes when it really starts spraying out of the wheel cylinders when you're bleeding them.
Again with personal experence (unless someone else can jump in here and give another idea) it's gonna take you a little time.

I have no fluid at all coming out of the proportioning valve for the rear brake lines. Could there be a clog in the valve or is the valve "tripped"?

i'm curious, disconnect the rear brake line at the master cylinder. If nothing theres your problem the master. If there is fluid pumping out of there than its the prop. valve

I tried that and the master was pumping good. I pulled the prop valve off completely and dissasembled it, cleaned the pieces and put it back together. That fixed the problem but now the rear is a little to strong. The ass end locks up a little early now. Man I suck at brakes. WTF?

you may need to adjust them out some.
